"Secret" compartment behind the 2nd row seats (don't ask me how I didn't know about it for almost half a year of ownership, lol)



Naturally, I must fill ever unused nook and cranny so I gathered this:

I was so excited when I saw this, but then I realized that we have cargo tie downs there, so no hidden storage compartment. I wonder if I can convert it? We haul a lot of crap in the back and have never really seen a need for the cargo tie downs.

The wife found out today that she could sit 'criss-cross applesauce' in the front passenger seat. Not sure why the manual didn't say anything about this.

Been trying to tell the woman that the 4R also accommodates 'Lap Naps' but since it's not in the manual it's a no go. Keep insisting to her that it's a hidden feature. :biggrin2:

Probably tough to convert it, due to the design of the 3rd row seats vs the design of the flat cargo area floor in the '2 row only' models. For cheap and easy storage of recovery items and tools you could use a Rubbermaid box with hook velcro in a few places on the bottom.. keeps it from sliding around on the carpet.

As mentioned earlier, the cruise control is not the nice, modern incarnation I've come to like on our Forester that will brake on hills and properly maintain speed on a steep grade. I have found that you can slap the stick over to S and it will pick 4th gear and hold speed on climbs much better and will overshoot far less past the crest. On most descents on-road, it seems that 4th can maintain speed, but 3rd is overkill though sometimes necessary. While going into S4 won't kill the cruise, going down to 3rd will. And yes, after driving nothing but manual cars for the past 12 years, I hate using the brakes on hills...not to mention that you'll cook your brakes descending passes out here if you don't downshift.

I was in S5 with the cruse control on and going down a hill. The transmission downshifted one gear to S4 to give some hold back but this did not happen until I was 10 mph over the CC setting.

Yeah, I noticed mine downshift itself as well, but again, nearly 10 mph over the set point. Doesn't work well when you normally cruise at 5 over. :der:

One other thing I noticed about the transmission that I don't much care for. When you shift to manual -S mode (which is handy when you travel through the mountains), It always starts you in 4th gear. A little annoying that it doesn't pick up in whatever gear you're currently in.

So when shifting to manual -s mode at a complete stand still, I first have to downshift 3 times to first gear before taking off. Other auto sticks I have driven know what gear you're in and start you there.

It also still ups and downshifts in manual mode if you rev it too high or need to downshift, kind of annoying

Yep, unlike our Forester, you're literally just telling the truck what the max gear to use is. It'll still shift like normal up to that gear. Wish you could tell it exactly what gear to be in and when, but it also isn't a manual.

Wont happen in 5th gen. Once it is started doors stay unlocked until driver shifts into D or R by default settings.

Do you or anyone know if the remote start is in every tr4 5th gen? Couldnt get mine to work. Was hoping i could just go in and have it programmed.

Its installed at the port, if its not on the window sticker you dont have one. If you do click unlock twice and hold and it will fire up, but a bad thing that you cant change is it turns off to get inside.

I have found that the little center light is actually aimed at the forward cupholder. Noticed it a while back when I noticed a shadow when reaching for a beverage. It comes on with the headlights I think. Only reason I figured this out was because I had the optional LED cupholder kit from the Scions in my Echo and realized what was happening.

Yep it took me about a year to notice. It's a "map light".

A suggestion that might work. I currently have my headrest on backwards so it folds towards the rear.

I thought it was there to shed a little light on the 2H-4H-4L shifter so you wouldn't have to be fumbling in the dark when you needed to make a drive change.

I always thought the little light shining down from above was just for ambience. Wife's Honda accord has that too, not really bright enough to read with, just kind of a pleasant glow.

Tried the unlock twice then hold on 3rd and it didnt work.

Figured as much! Just wasnt sure if it was something that could be programmed by a dealer

Im in Michigan so its must in the winter. Mine doesnt have Remote start either, but did come with heated leather seats.

Making the ECO green logo and the Eco Bar go away - new option

While rushing to the airport today, I found another way to make the ECO green logo disappear, along with the Eco Bar going away too... Once you get up to 90 miles/hour, both the Eco light and the bar will go away - until you drop below 88 miles/hour.
