Things you did not know about your 4runner

The optional roof rails trap and hold on to snow, once it melts and freezes a bit the (now) block of ice slides around between the rails. Annoying but could also scratch up the roof, think I'll move them close together for next winter.

What's winter?:rofl::surfer::confused:

Ah-HA!

if on a steep hill in 'Drive' and you take your foot off the brake and start to roll backwards the traction control will kick in.

So THAT'S what that is!! I haven't had mine for long, but was surprised to see something kick in when I was on a hill. I was starting to think it had a problem. Now I just want to go drive to a steep hill and take my foot off the brake just to see what happens.

Great aftermarket install the dealer didn't know about.

When I got home from the dealer, I went through it like anyone would. Biggest find was that mine had a remote starter installed and I didn't realize it. One new remote later and I can start mine, lock it, etc., from 2,000 feet away! Awesome! It's already come in handy when I got somewhere and thought I might not have locked it.

How did you figure that out? Got pics of what to look for?

You can remote start your vehicle from more than 1/3 mile away?

Gawd yes. That frozen block of ice sliding around in the rails. I've stopped a few times and grabbed it out of there. LOL

This really made me laugh out loud. Damnit, this option wasn't made available to me!

Anyone notice the clear plastic holders on the driver side sun visor? One of them has the instructions for how to shift to 4wd but the other one is empty. Perhaps it is a location for instructions for crawl control that I do not have?

After spending a day driving up and down mountains using Select Shift to keep it in 2nd or 3rd, the ecu seems to get the drift and will keep it in the lower gears for a while when I put it back into D and pull onto a flat highway.

When I first got mine I read the 4WD section in the manual to learn how all the wichamagigs worked, and was pleased to learn that in 4 Lo with the rear diff locked, Atrac will work for the front while under 4 mph.

This is actually the 'Hill-Start Assist control'. Closely related to the traction control, and uses the same light (but give you a 'buzzer' sound) but it is listed as a separate feature in the manual. Yeah, it is usually a WTF moment the first time it goes off, it sounds like something is broken!

You think that sounds gnarly? Get on a hill and put it in Crawl Control. Sounds like the drive train is going through a tree chipper!

It also happens if you are backing up, and go from Reverse into Drive while still rolling backwards.

don't do this BTW, its one of the quickest ways to kill your transmission. what you are doing is using a little tiny band in the transmission to stop the vehicle and it isn't designed for that.

Damn straight on this. Extremely annoying. With the paper thin sheetmetal, paint and glass on this truck I am expecting to have a ton of scratches and dents and eventually a broken windshield. Sounds like someone is shoveling bricks onto the roof.:wow:

Shifting Trail Edition lever into neutral enables you to move vehicle regardless of transmission in Park and vehicle is off. At least I found this out on my driveway and no where else lol.

I'm not sure if this one is widely known, but I figured it out last night and thought I should share. Under the hood, there's a plastic piece that covers the radiator, fan, etc... at the front of the vehicle. It's held on by a bunch of little circular plastic pins. The pins have a smaller circle inside the larger one which is connected to the piece that's providing the friction. I used to think that you had to use a small screw driver to pry those things up. Instead, if you push in on the smaller circle it will release the tension and allow you to pull the pins out. Then you just have to reset them by pushing up on the pin and can snap it back into place.
