Thinking about buying a 3rd gen with 140k... too many miles?

I found a 1996 Limited 4WD, leather, moonroof, but with 140k miles on it. Can i expect another 100k+ miles out of it?

Also, evidently the radio/CD is dead... any reason why i cant just pick up a new one and install it?

The leather has a rip... is leather difficult to patch?

I'm going to look at it tomorrow; what should i keep my eyes peeled for? Any questions in particular i should ask the dealer?

and finally, i've looked at KBB values etc, but what do you think i should hope to pay for it assuming these imperfections but that it looks and runs good?

take it to a mechanic and have him go over it very well. Dont let the dealer do this . I think the cd player is easy enough to replace .
If it was properly taken care of then I think you should be able to get another 100K miles out of it , but you may have to put some money into it .

I think thholr hit the nail on the head. I have owned 4 cars with over 200,000 miles on them and I found you have to put about 2 to 2 1/2 times the money you did to keep the car going in the first 100,000 miles. If you look at it from not having to buy a new car it is certainly cheaper.

So, if the 4Runner is in good shape, yes it will last another 100,000 miles, just be prepared to dump a little money into it during that time.

Thanks guys, i plan on taking it to a mechanic. Thats the problem with being a college student in a new town... you dont know any good mechanics and neither do your buddies. For a 4Runner though i'll find one .

The dealer is asking 6.6k, however after seeing it today i now understand the low price. The driver side leather is pretty much shot, the antenna is gone, CD/Stereo doesnt work, the plastic between the step part of the running board and the vehicle is shot. The body has some scratches, mainly on the silver part. The hood has a dent, the front bumper has small dents. One of the front headlights has a hole from a rock so is all mildewed. To top it all off the dealer stood me up (the car was at the shop getting detailed) although with decent excuses. Anyways, I'm going to take it to the local toyota dealership, the service department said theyd inspect it.

The weirdest part is that the 4Runner is labeled both SR5 and Limited.... i didn't think it was possible...

Nope, the cladding comes in all sorts of colors.

As far as the cladding, in some cases some very odd combinations that don't look very good.

So, the dealer was asking $6600 thirteen years ago. What would the dealer ask for the same truck/ same miles today? Not that much* less.... maybe $4500? Crazy

He's done it at least twice today alone. There was another thread from 2004 about a guy backing his GFs 02 into something and trying to fix rear bumper.

I got stuck paying almost $10k for a clean 4Runner with good maintenance at 160k miles. Everyone wants one here in CO. Every truck in the area that was selling for less, around $8k, was falling apart.

You know, this is exactly where my mind was going when I saw the resurrection date of this thread. I don't think the 4wd models are going to get any cheaper than they are now. They will probably be the next Land cruiser in desirability and prices....
My 98 Limited with E locker I just bought has 220K on it and thought I was doing good getting it for 4900. Granted, it has NO rust under it at all. Even has the original stickers visible on the front disk dust shields with the date still legible. 12/4/97. I thought that was pretty amazing.
