Thinking about buying an '06 Sport Edition V8

Hey man, chiming in here from Hawaii. Trust me, when I bought my 4runner from the Mainland (US), I did find it from the internet, and luckily for me I had my mom drive and inspect the vehicle before I pulled the trigger on the buy. But for shipping from San Diego to Hawaii, we paid about $1500 and that is full coverage....and that is shipping across the pacific. I took a real gamble with buying without looking at it. So I know how it feels purchasing from the internet. Good luck man......

I just bought my 08 SR5 V6 4WD and did it over the internet. I bought it from a Lexus dealer and had a third party inspection service check it out for me. I ran the VIN through Carfax and Autocheck and also plugged it in the Toyota owner's site. Prior owner had all scheduled maintenance done at a Toyota dealer so everything showed up, which was nice. I then had it shipped from the Midwest to East Coast and it cost $575.

CARCHEX | Extended Car Warranty, Auto Warranty, Car Inspections
SGS - What You Need To Be Sure

For me, it was just another data point. Before pulling the trigger on my particular 4Runner, I had:

1. Carfax - 1 owner, low miles, no accidents
2. Autocheck - verified what Carfax showed (I always got both carfax and autocheck since sometimes they had conflicting info)
3. Maintenance records from toyota.com/owners site which showed all recommended maintenance performed at a Toyota dealership
4. Long standing Lexus dealer who had sold lots of cars on the internet (I found reviews etc. of this dealer)
5. The third party inspection service

I wouldn't rely on just one of these data points but when I added them all together, I felt pretty comfortable about the purchase. And I am loving my new 4Runner.

Actually, it really wasn't. I spent a few weeks searching online which didn't cost anything. I looked on ebay, cars.com, and autotrader. Most online listings provide the Carfax for free. I paid $45 for a 1 month subscription to Autocheck where I could check an unlimited number of VIN's, so I ran dozens through that service. The toyota.com/owners service is free as well, so I would check the VINs there too.

After a few weeks of searching, I found one that looked good. Only at that point did I pay for the third-party inspection. After that checked out, I haggled with the dealer and then did the deal. It was my first time buying a car online and overall, I think it worked out great. The shipping took about 2 weeks, but that was mostly due to the bad weather that went through the midwest a week or two ago.

Well that all sounds pretty do-able. It would definately open my options up, but I still don't know if I could pull the trigger in the end without seeing it.

Eh, its a longshot anyways. I have a 2010 Sequoia SR5 that I want to trade (only 3800 miles on it) and im just not happy with it. Powerful, yes, but other than that, i still miss the 4Runner. I should have looked into this way of finding a 4Runner back when I was in need of a new truck.

I found one a i really like, but they want a pretty penny for it.

What do you guys use as a fair guage to buy a car? Edmunds? Blue Book?

Should i automatically lowball them?

All good questions that i'd be anxious to hear thoughts on as well.

I saw a couple decent looking ones around Ohio and Northwest NY State (buffalo area) I saw on Autotrader. If I was ready to pull the trigger, i'd almost snag one of them, but waiting for tax refund time aft I do my taxes and maybe even to my work bonus time this summer for a hefty down payment...

That depends on the runner! Mileage, history, past use, V8 or 6, etc.

Forgive me for reviving my old thread, but ivefound another 08 4Runner Sport V8 with mileage UNDER 20k! Theyre asking $31900. Ive gone to the different sites to check how much its worth, and this is what ive come to find out:

KBB = $34k (you outtah yer mind?)

Edmunds = $27k

Black Book = $27k

Mind you im still trying to sell my Sequoia and have had 3 people interested, but this ride is pretty far away, but id drop the $ to get it transported to me IF the price was right.

People's thoughts on what value to follow? Maybe some tips on best way to get my asking price for the Sequoia? (which btw is a little UNDER what Edmunds says its worth....just wanna move it!)

Also, when i call the dealerships that have 4runners, they ask if i have a trade, i mention the Sequoia and they all say, "THOSE are in demand cuz there arent many out there". Is that just "a line" to bait you into doing business? You know how car dealers can be full of :toilet:

My advice is do your negotiating on the 4Runner first. Agree on a price you can live with, then bring the trade value into the discussion.

When I am purchasing a vehicle from a dealership I do not even mention I want to trade in a vehicle until after we've agreed on a fair price for the vehicle I want to buy.

As far as a value on that truck with 20k miles.... They are probably going to get top dollar for it because its crazy low miles. A one owner with the normal 50 or 60k would be a much better deal and could be every bit as nice especially if they were mostly highway miles.

Yeah, well, im not going to come close to $32k. I might throw $26 out as a figure, but i know theyd laugh at it....and thats understandable.

I should see it as an investment, just like the '03 i got. Got it at 16k, has 83k now. Only had the scheduled maintenence, oil changes every 3k and the most unfortunate (knock on wood) was the front calipers.

I want that again, i guess. (minus the calipers thing, of course).
