I'm thinking a lot lately about selling my 4Runner. Everything I've done to it has been geared toward offroading and I'm just not sure the hobby fits me anymore
I've got two small children so its pretty hard to find time to get away and I've got other interests that are much more convenient to me. My question to all of you is what do you think my truck is worth.

Its a 1998 with 135,000 miles. Timing belt was done recently and I've been running mobile 1 for about a year now. The interior isn't terrible but the leather is cracked in a few spots and the steering wheel is in rough shape. The back bumper has seen better days but the body overall looks pretty good. Most of the mods should be in my signature but basically its got 3" lift coils, Tacoma wheels with 285/75/16 KM2s about 50% tread, custom rock sliders, cobra CB with firestik antenna, spiderstrax spacers, window tint, and a Coleman safari rack.... that should give you guys a basic idea. Think I could get $4000 out of her?

Its hard to say, but I think you should be able to get 8-9k

Its hard to compare prices on opposite parts of the country, but I look on craigslist and ebay in my local area all the time and people ask 8-9 for 4runners with 200k. Then I see nice ones listed on t4r for 8-9 k with 100k ..
 
You should be able to get at least 5500 out of the truck....

... but, I gotta ask. Have you ever gone on any overland trips? I have had many folks who have come along on the trips tell me that they were about to sell their trucks before they started overlanding. Back country travel / camping is a family activity for many folks.

Might link up with these guys for a trip before you ditch your truck (or come on down and attend one of the CO trips, we would be happy to have you):

I second Leary on this one. I took my first overland trip last October and find myself looking for any reason to get out and cruise the National Forest any time I can. Overland is not rock crawlin, mud slingin, mines bigger than yours enviroment, not that any of that is a bad thing. It can be a milder version of all the above in a family atmosphere. I'm loving it so far and will be taking the wife on our first real trip in a couple weeks. :thumb3:

Wow those look really fun...I wish they had something like this around the east coast area. I cant really find anything online..
 
I think it is really hard to say. I've gotten beat to the punch on three 98 4Runners in the last 2 weeks, all similiar milieage as yours without the "custom dents haha" and excellent interiors. They went for anywhere from $4000 - $5000. Also, being in the snow belt, how is your truck with rust? All things to consider, but I would think you can at least get what you are hoping for relatively easily.
 
I have seen a number of '98's around here lately - all selling for about $4,000. It would be tough to get anymore than that considering the time of year(winter is when you would get the most for a 4x4) and the price of gas going up 10 cents per gallon every day.
 
Check out prices in the New York City/North Jersey area, 4Runners are listed several thousand dollars below suggested retail.

To me ... selling just doesn't make sense unless you are getting killed by gas costs. I mean .... that truck will probably go 300k and you will get so little in return.


If you want to accommodate the kids, why not remove the lift and go back to stock or at least slowly phase out the aggressive mods. Also sell the roof rack, this will help with MPGs.


Sorry to be a downer but I tend to think the only way forward with my truck is drive it till it dies. My 4Runner is probably only worth $5-6k but I would never sell it .. what could I get in return? Another vehicle with 100k mi instead of 200k, how long will that one run?
