im thinking about trading in my 06 4runner limited v8 for a new avalanche, im so sick of the high speed drone and the clunck when stopping, it drives me nuts that a 45k truck has these so called " normal driving charecteristics." what do u guys think about the avalanche? chevy is running 0% for 5 years and has a lifetime powertrain warrenty. thanks for your input.

Take it to the dealer to have it check out. A toyota will save you $$$ in the long run. Good luck.

I'm always against trading in newer vehicles, you will take a bath financially. If you can really justify (personal justification) it, do it. But if I were you I would try and sell it outright.

Um, these are not normal driving characteristics...

i have brought it to the dealer several times and the either tell me they can not replicate the problem or its a normal characteristic of the vehicle. its such a joke. just look at those problems on this forum and u will see im not the only one this has happened to. i love this truck a lot but i cant see myself dealing with those quircks for the next couple of years.

I think the odds are really good that a Chevy Avalanche will give you even more to be annoyed about..... seriously.

Those things are so ugly. If you're going with GMC, at least get a real truck like the Sierra or a Denali. Avalanche looks like an over-grown Ridgeline.

I don't know what you're talking about, but I hear no drone or clunking when I'm in a 4th Gen. It rides very comfortable, actually. Clunking could be axle wrap, so have your dealership lube the drivetrain. The drone could be from your tires?

The Avalanche is a nice truck IMO . I've heard from friends that own them plenty complaints , that are just different complaints than what you have . Everything has its quirks , the odds of you getting something that is free from any type of issue's are pretty slim at best. Every vehicle has its quirks and you will be trading one set of problems for a different set of problems IMO.

The 0% and lifetime powertrain is exactly what they want to bring you/people back to the american side . They are hurting and need to incentive and cut unreal deals to get you into the dealer . Not a bad deal with getting free money.

Everything has it's problem's , bottom line I you would be trading one set for the other , and loosing money in the long run , since the depreciation on the AV. will drop like a rock.

Just my .02

thanks for your input, i really have to way my pros and cons. the runner definatley has a lexus quality ride and the resale is awesome. pretty much if they dont meet my price im not goin anywhere. but if i do ill be sure to post some pics!!

Tell us the truth... you're really a CHEVY nut at heart, aren't you? :bouncy:

Unless you have an aftermarket exhaust, I wouldn't know how you can hear a drone.

I would be careful of the powertrain warranty. I would make sure that this warranty is from CHEVROLET, and not from the dealer. From Chevy website, i don't see any mentioning of lifetime powertrain warranty. The lifetime powertrain is only for Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge.

See this link from Chevy: http://www.chevrolet.com/warranty/

clunking could be your slip yoke

and drone is definitely your tires. Get some tires and an alignment if your wear is excessive or uneven.

I like how the second gen Avalanche looks, much better than the first. It's a great design concept and from what I'm told the second gen allows the glass to be up with the midgate down, so you can get a huge extended enclosed bed into the cab. I don't like the Cadillac version of it, Escalade EXT I think (don't know what's what, since they're all Escalade something, ESV, EXT, ETC, blah blah). But with the Tundra CrewMax out, I'll take one of those instead.

The Avalanche isn't a pansy truck like the Ridgeline. The Ridgeline is the most fulgiest thing out there, next to the Aztek.

Don't think GM has a lifetime warranty, I do recall they upped the powertrain warranty to 100k miles.

Please go to the different dealer and take advantage of the fact that you live in a capitalist country! AKA, if you dont like what one dealer says, try try again.

What about the lemon law in NJ? Does it only apply to repairs made?

Personally, I think the 4Runner in general will out last the GM, Ford, or Chrysler by hundreds of thousands of miles and many years.

As was mentioned, every vehicle has its flukes that cross many generations. GMs have general issues that just keep causing problems. Fords are notorious for electrical problems. Chryslers have problems with transmissions and engine gaskets.

I am sure that the "foreign" vehicles are the same though. But my 4 year old Subaru has had no problems. My 4Runner is only 7 months old though.

If you CAN replicate it, demand to go on the test drive, or do the test drive.

Could be some truth in the the drivetrain hum. For the first time in a long time I started noticing quirks and signs of age on my 4Runner. There is a drivetrain/diff hum at about 70mph on light throttle, lift off, it goes away, returns as soon as it settles into overdrive, very faint but when you're Atype obsessive compulsive...... you need to crank up the tunes! The other item and I know its well documented on the 4th gens is weak brake life. I had the rotors turned and new pads fitted at about 45,000 as it starting shimmying to a stop, and at 65,000 its back and feeling a bit like sandpaper. That said, best frikkin vehicle I have ever owned, it scares me to think I will have to replace it one day and the next one may not give such good service. I also had a few teething issues, most annoying being the gearbox shuddering at around 40mph in 5th over drive like its hunting, it never fixed itself and the dealer claim 'normal', so I learned to drive around it. Secondly wobbling tires when cold, new Revos at 45,000 partly cured it but not completely. I also have some driveline shunt at stops, which is odd because you never hear of it on a V6. It just doesnt bother me that much any more because its 'normal'. Keep the 4Runner, and work on correcting the niggles. At worst you'll still have $18-$20k to put down against the next vehicle in 3-4yrs, not so with a Chevy.

So you got 45,000 miles out of your original brakes and you consider that weak brake life? I think that's pretty good for a 4000+ lb SUV.

To clarify, I was fine with 45,000 miles out of a set of pads, actually they still had about 35% left as most of my mileage is highway. But warped rotors/discs at 45,000 with most of that on highway I think is below par. I would replace pads every 20,000 if thats all it took to have smooth breaking, but skimming the discs as well is pricey.
