Thinking of upgrading to a newer 4Runner

So I am thinking of getting a newer 4runner, 2008 - 2012. i currently have a 2000 with 136k miles, no problems, very little rust, lifted with BFG. For those of you who have upgraded. Do you think it was worth it?

Well, I guess it depends what kind of vehicle owner you are. I know many who go through vehicles like crazy because they get bored and want something new or different on a regular basis. And then there's guys like me who find a quality vehicle and drive it until it's dead.

My 2000 has around the same mileage as yours, and if the reputation of these trucks holds true, I'm going to be driving it for a very long time and logging many cool adventures in it.

The good thing is, if you're tired of your 3rd Gen, you know you won't have any difficulty selling it.

I keep having the itch to "upgrade" to a new 5th gen. The things that are holding me back are:
The 6th gen should be coming out soon and I want to see what they change
my 3rd gen still runs perfectly (everything works) and is paid off.
full time AWD is only available on the limited.

The things that make me want to switch:
The 5th gen rides better for long road trips, my 3rd gen rides pretty rough with a somewhat stock suspension.
newer, more modern vehicle
3rd gen is starting to get some rust

where are you long trips normally to? Vacay, camping, wheeling, etc. if not camping or wheeling, I'd vote for a fuel efficient vehicle. I bought a 2014 Mazda 6 when it first came out. At 60 I can get 40+mpg. 70 I get 35-38.

Drive it and figure out what you like better. These are two different animals and not very comparable IMO.

Agreed, you should post this in a different forum. You're asking guys who love their 3rd gen's if you should get rid of yours. The overwhelming majority will say NO KEEP IT.

It's your truck man, do what you want. I feel like if I traded up my 3rd gen I would regret it down the road, even if it is for a newer T4R

I had an '06 Sport Edition in between 2 of my 3rd gens. They are bigger and in my opinion do not feel as nimble as the 3rd. The 4.0 does have some get up and go though! I use my 4runners as my second car/weekend car so I just like the smaller feel of my 3rds. I never looked up the actual measurements to see if there is much difference or if I'm crazy. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I'm really leaning towards keeping it,but wanted to know what 3rd gen guys think. If I find a good deal on a 5th gen I might just keep them both for awhile. I a sort of worried that the 5th gen might not be as good as the 3th. So far my 3rd gen has been rock solid.

IMHO I would keep you're 3rd gen. I have a 3rd and a 5th gen, and I enjoy driving my 3rd so much more. Maybe it's because of the work I put into it? Either way the 5th feels a bit bigger, and not nearly as nimble as my 3rd. I drive my 3rd all the time and my 5th gen TEP sits almost always. But that's just my .02.
