This is Why you Don't Buy Synthetic Winch Rope!!

Was pulling a rig out yesterday with my Warn M8000 using about 50ft of Warn 18,000lb rated winch rope pulling out a FJ cruiser that was stuck in mud/snow dug out the wheels and axle with a shovel, hooked to his D-ring on his steel bumper started to pull with my winch while my rear was strapped to a Tree and boom :boom: winch line snaps....Now I have had the synthetic on for about 9 months total and done maybe 50 recovery's with it the line was immaculate always took care of it and I was using proper winching techniques and the line snapped about 20feet from the lead. I never seen or heard of this and there was definitely alot less then 18,000lbs being pulled....Im going to try and get it replaced under warranty because something just don't add up





I think I will be going back to aircraft cable shit don't break unless your trying to do some extreme pulling. definitely was not attempting anything out of the ordinary here.

fyi: Aircraft cable is just cable that has been tested, rated and approved by the faa.

Sorry to hear about your rope. I have never heard of any issues with synthetic rope though. I guess everything has their faults. It's still better to have synthetic rope break than a cable though. Hopefully warn replaces it for free.

I just call the steel cables aircraft cable its the ignorant redneck in me lol we aint to proper in el dorado county lol. but you are correct hopefully warn takes care of it everybody that was watching the recovery was in shock like it broke :wow2:

Guess you've never seen wire cable break if you are this upset about your rope breaking. I would still take rope over wire any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I would feel pretty good about 50+ previous recoveries going off without a hitch.

I have steel cable on my Jeep been on there for over 8 years done 100s of recoveries on that Warn not a single issue this synthetic rope is less then a year old should not have broken and it was in tip top shape...

I have seen a cable break twice on the rubicon once was pretty nasty the other was not so bad. That is why when I winch with steel cable I always put a towel on the rope at about 2/3 to mid length of the lead incase it snaps the towel slows it down a bit...

I will be calling Warn in the morning and giving them a piece of my mind the rope was so new the manufacturing day is within a year.

here is when the Synthetic rope was made 11/13/2012 it was manufactured within the last 14 months and then sat on the shelf until I bought it last May 2013

rope is only better if you care about keeping your rig shiny if the cable does break...I don't mind another trail mark from hard wheeling on the trail and my hands are so ruff the steel cable don't feel any different then the rope in my bare hands

:shocked: Thank God i already have synthetic rope. My truck is about to go into the detailers for a buff and wax, its just not shiny enough.

Good luck with Warn, get a replacement rope and sell it to some moron that thinks synthetic is better than their wire cable. :wacko:

I've used synthetic winch cable to extract a Sierra HD attached to a trailer hauling a tractor... which is pushing a total weight of 12-13k pounds.

I think your rope just was born wrong.

I go wheeling every weekend and during the week day here and there, Ive pulled out alot of stock Jeeps and trucks, I have 10k Hard Trail Miles on this Rig so far as it's not a daily driver. I tend to be a really nice guy and I feel bad for the idiots If I see someone stuck I pull off and bust out the Warn, I have been stuck a time or two and someone saved me so I try to be the good samaritan and help someone out. I go snow wheeling alot at Iron Mountain in Mormon Emigrant Trail and without fail right when I get there 2-3 people are stuck I try to help out. I have pulled a few trees out and pulled my self out 2-3 times since owning the winch...On my two rubicon trips with this 4th Gen I yanked out my cousins ram charger 6 times he broke completely and was being towed(dragged) back across rocks by two dana60ed 1st gen 4runners and he kept getting stuck on the rocks so I had to winch him back then they dragged him on a new line. The day the winch broke I had like 5-6 recoveries 50 is on the low end to be honest. Its not like crazy winching they just need a little tug!:der:

That's the beautiful thing about living in the El Dorado National Forrest the Rubicon is a 20 minute drive, we have Fordyce and we Have Mormon emigrant Trail along with the folsom ohv off road park definitely a shit ton of trails and they are amazing I don't think i will ever move from this area we have rubicon in the summer and iron mountain in the winter did do a rubicon trip the day after christmas and it was cold as **** camping in the winter....

the ZJ is a great rig very capable and dirt cheap, mine has the 5.2 it was the pimp shit for the 95 mine is on it's last leg getting ready to sell it and upgrade my DD to a 3rd gen:fishing:

ive had my cable break 2 times, both under very severe conditions, while using a snatch block, and stalling out my 8500 winch. it was fast, but nothing crazy, the cable just dropped to the ground.


like I said in the other thread, winches are dangerous anyway, if you're smart in its use, cable is just fine.

The offered to replace my winch rope

So warn offered to replace my synthetic winch rope/line after sending in multiple pictures and being adamant and talking on the phone for 30 minutes. They said they would replace it as a courtesy. No I have the warn rep asking me for the receipt where I purchased my Winch Rope. I bought this rig less then 7 months ago from 4runnerseth. I tried giving him a call but he is moving to a new home/working today so I don't know if he will get back to me in time. I also called 4wheelparts they only have his invoice from 2011 when he bought a m8000 for his fj build. I am wondering if any of you know where he possibly bought his winch at for his 4runner? I looked up old post online and couldn't not find any info. I would greatly appreciate some help tracking down a receipt. Warn told me they would warranty it no problem, just gotta jump through the hoops!

I would tell them to kick rocks regarding the receipt, you lost it. The rope still unexplainably failed while in a "cared for condition". I may not agree with you on switching to cable but i stand behind you getting a replacement. A technicality of paperwork shouldn't keep them from standing behind their product, and i would tell them that. :mad2:

I have to say....I hate Facebook but I use it here and there and I searched Seth's first and last name, added him sent him a message and we've been chatting all morning...he ordered it from Amazon! Sent me a PDF of the receipt through e-mail and Then I forward it to Warn they sent me out a Brand New Synthetic rope...I am going to keep it synthetic hopefully this one don't break! I do have the cable sitting here but I can't find my metal roller. So back to synthetic for round 2. Seth is such a great guy 7 months after purchasing his Rig off craigslist still willing to help me out not enough good things can be said about this guy! Im kind of sad he's moving to North Carolina. Thanks for all the help guys hopefully I get atleast another 50 recoveries out of this one.


On a side note the rep at warn told me that synthetic rope is to be replaced every single year no matter what. does this make sense? 300 synthetic rope needs to replaced yearly?arty::sniper:
