This noise will be the death of me

I've searched everywhere throughout this forum for the answer but couldn't find it so here's my situation:

There's an annoying noise coming from underneath my 05 4Runner Sport whenever I go over bumps. Even the slightest bump. Typical complaint right? But here's the thing; It seems to be coming from the front passenger side tire area. BUT, the noise stops whenever I brake. So it's kinda weird. I took it to the dealership and the said that I have a loose splash guard. They fixed it but the noise still continues. I'm stumped. I pulled the tire off and inspected everything but everything is tight and nothing is leaking.

What the hell is this noise? Sounds like something is clanking. The noise only stops whenever I brake.

Do you have a cold air intake? Reason I ask is mine would knock on the wheel well when I hit bumps. Got worse over time as it sagged a bit.

I have the exact same noise in my 98 LTD. I'm now convinced its the little thin metal protection cover for the fuel lines under the front of the truck . When I crawl under there and tap it with my fingers it gives off this annoying twang metallic sound .

Everything in my truck is stock so I don't think I do. I'll check the fuel lines to see if I can find anything.

Since you indicate that the noise goes away when you are applying the brakes, it might be the brake pads rattling in the caliper. Have you had brake work done recently? Maybe the anti-rattle springs were not re-installed when they installed the new pads?

When I bought the truck the front brakes were just done. I bought it from the Toyota dealership. The people working there were a bunch of ****s so I wouldn't be surprised if they messed up on installing the brakes correctly. It seemed ok but I'll have a look again.

Please let us know what you find out. I have a similar issue with my '04 Sport V8 that is most likely the result of a collision repair done poorly by a "Certified Toyota Collision Shop" three years ago - of course they are no longer in business and Toyota will not do a thing for me (but that is another story).

Or it could be something related to service I had done at 90K (15K ago) that included new front and rear brake pads...or it could be ????

Owning a '91 Miata for several years made me an expert of tracking down and eliminating all kinds of frustrating noises. Unfortunately the 4Runner noise has me baffled and it is driving me nuts.

I've already eliminated brakes as the suspect. I even went as far as to check the muffler , thinking something broke inside and was vibrating. Going to change oil and filter tomorrow so will have another round underneath it . I cant find anything except that little metal shield that covers the fuel lines up front. Tomorrow Im going to jam a stick or bolt in that and see if that stops it.

I've had the same vibrating noise on my '05 SR5. At first I thought it was the muffler, but soon realized it wasn't that. Then I wondered if it was the heat shield but it sounds like the noise is closer towards the front of the truck. So I still have no idea what it is/could be, any answers or suggestions to what it could be would be great. I'm sure more than a few people would appreciate that as well and I'll keep searching but so far no luck. :crybaby:

Maybe the heat shield above your catalytic converter? Mine was loose and made a very annoying noise until I fixed it.

Sure sounds like brake pads moving around.

I posted somewhere here what mine was . There is a little anti rattle spring right on top of the front brake pads ( it was the pass side on mine) . For some strange reason , the front of that spring popped out of the holder on the caliper. I compressed the clip and put it back and no more weird sound . Its worth a check guys .
I discovered this while changing front pads .

I will say this one bugged me the most aswell but a set of anti rattle clips from toyota will cure this more than likely. The ones that seem to come with aftermarket brake pads are crap and usually fall out after a little bit.

Agreed ! That sound drove me crazy ! Glad its fixed.

Rattling

I have had great experience with the Duralast line of Ceramic pads from Auto Zone. The hardware that comes with the new pads is better than OEM. I've had OEM pads make the same annoying "clack". Just be sure to use new hardware every time you replace the brakes.

I've also had an annoying "click" result from not tightening down the bolts securing the factory skid plate. This is usually due to the teenager at the quick oil change place getting a txt from his GF in the middle of tightening down the bolts in my T4R and then forgetting to finish the job.
