If you're talking smaller, I'd go for the 4.6L 1UR-FE V8 that goes in the Tundra. It's actually meant to be used in a truck vs. a car engine.

I wouldn't.....that's why i said tuned. It's a vvt upper so nothing some cam/valve timing and tuning couldn't fix vs using the outdated 4.6

:blabla:haha, all in good fun. I for one, am hoping there is a 6th gen. Any 6th gen. As opposed to Toyota killing off or neutering the 4R ala pathfinder. I also do not care how ugly they make it. The 4R was never a looker anyway, and I don't need my tow vehicle / trail vehicle to be purdy. Lift it, stuff some big tires under there and bolt on some lights and pretty much any truck will look OK.

Are we talking about the same engine? The 1UR-FE isn't that old, it came out in 2010. It's a full Aluminum block & Head with Dual VVTi that replaced the aging 2UZ-FE (4.7L V8 that is in my '04 4Runner).

I just bought a 2016 Trail and not that anyone cares but here is why...
1. End of year deal on a proven design and the Trails this year are flying out of the dealer lots around here.
2. The pending redesign in 2018 was too great of a risk to wait on for me. Rumors of monocoque chassis and such reminded me of how Nissan screwed up the Pathfinder. Between the new Obama EPA regulations coming and the demand from moms for a nice mall crawler that gets better mileage, I fear the 4rnr as we know it is doomed. I hope not and I hope I'm wrong but again it was too much of a risk for me to wait.
3. Even if they dont go all unibody the 2018 will most likely get the same motor and trans as the new Tacoma. Isn't that a car motor... What a horrible combination. The motor is not for a truck type vehicle with no low end torque available. The transmission is plagued with gear hunting in an effort to save fuel or whatever. The saving grace for the new Tacoma is the availability of a manual trans. They can't keep them on the dealer lots. Judging from recent history there will be no manual in the 4rnr.
4. The current design as mentioned is proven and there is huge aftermarket support for it. If the new 4rnr stays true to what it is now it will take the aftermarket a while to come out with products. I obviously don't have a lot of patience and again the new 4rnr could possibly compete with the Pathfinder, i.e., nightmare!
5. The current 4rnr is the closest thing we have here in the US to a overseas Toyota. Unfortunately, as far as vehicles go, we will never get the best the manufacturers can make. They get those vehicles overseas. We get sub par vehicles here. Look at what Toyota makes in Australia. Incredible vehicles.
So that was basically the thought process for me of why I just bought a 2016. YMMV:fro:

Yeah, that's why I didn't want to wait any longer to get mine. The 5th gen is pretty much the last decent off-road SUV left on the US market, thanks to the @%# treehugger/leftist politicians. It's just a matter of time before no one will be allowed to sell any practical vehicle in the US.
4R Trail 4ever!
Our 4R Trail, Canadian model, came with KDSS, rear locker, sun roof, heated front seats, all mod cons and Goodyear Duratracs. I'll be 84 in 2 months so I know it will last me the rest of my life, and it will still be worth a bundle if the wife wants to trade it on a Rav4 or other smaller 4x4. You can't beat that. But first, we're going to hit a lot of trails in it next summer! - Ted

This is why I made an effort to buy a 5th gen before the 6th gen comes out. It looks like every other mom-mobile out there. I wish my 5th gen had less miles but it should hold its value a while if this really is the 6th gen.
