This time the brakes didn't work!

the 4runners ABS system is super intrusive. I can always feel the pedal vibrating and dancing if braking with anything other than normal force. Springs making noises etc....

It was the same in my 2009 FJ. I understand why Toyota does it, but I really have no idea if it is truly warranted to this extent.

And I thought I was crazy... Never happened on the pavement just on this transition from dirt to gravel covered pavement intersection by my house, always chalked it up to trying to stop to quick on gravel or something..

An abs switch would be amazing, 2 things that drive me insane is not being able to fully turn off the traction control while moving, and the way the ABS trips out offroad at times

Brake Dodgers

Brakes malfunctioned, IMO, yesterday for the second time in as many years. I usually brake slowly so emergency braking is avoided. I don't want to break anything because I didn't brake in time.
So I hit the brakes hard yesterday in stop and go traffic approaching Dodger Stadium on the Harbor/Pasadena 110 "Freeway" in downtown LA. I looked down for a second and when I looked back at the road ahead I see a small sedan stopping in front of me. The brakes worked but the tires, suspension and everything/something was jumping and vibrating hard. No screech, no skid, but the sound was of something skipping. Tires or brake pads, I don't know which. I don't know how to describe it any better than that. The sound was awful and I thought the brakes were going to fail. The 4Runner stopped in time but the guy in front of me heard it too. After that he started to fall way back from the car in front of him and I stayed back, not sure if the brakes were working right.
At 1:30 pm traffic into Dodger Stadium for Game 1 of the World Series was backing up onto this old freeway. For a 5:00 pm game time. Go Dodgers!

Sounds like it might have been the ABS module pulsing the brakes. It's a very distinct sounds almost like someone hammering rapidly.

ps My wife is a die hard Cubs fan and I am not really a baseball fan so I am going to route for the Dodger.

Go Dodgers.

Interesting reads here, I don't want to sound condescending being a newbie here but I have to assume that peeps have been driving and using ABS equipped vehicles for a substantial amount of their driving career?

The basic premise of these systems hasn't changed with the fact that they are intended to bring the vehicle to a complete stop in as little distance as possible, providing the driver is applying full braking power consistently. Any modulation of ones foot on the brake pedal will instigate a change in the ABS function to accommodate. Some systems are better than others of course and react faster.

I agree this system (master cylinder) is freaking loud. I've already experienced a 4 wheel lockup in the 3 months I've owned it on wet pavement due to a civic owner deciding a lane change was needed at my front bumper. But even with the mechanical shaking of the ABS felt through the wheel and vehicle, I was pleased at how fast it brought the truck to a full stop. Wasn't please with how much the front end dove but it never felt out of control. Which is the other purpose of ABS, allowing steering control under maximum braking force.

I dunno - yeah it could be quieter but it is what it is I guess, they should have been able to insulate better. As for the braking failures mentioned in this thread - pretty scary, has to be a major defect beyond the driver perhaps 'disengaging' the initial ABS cycle. Hopefully got sorted.

Ha, don't feel bad as I started a thread pretty early on as I almost sh!t myself the first time it happened in the rain on a dark 6 lane road. The funny thing is I was able to actually get my truck to skid leaving rubber on the pavement which is shouldn't do.

Now, that could be because I changed the tires to a different tire or it's simply the ABS system over reacting. Which is what I personally think. It frequently happens to me near my office when I have to stop for the red light on rutted pavement caused by semi-truck traffic.

Last week I installed new new tires which are heavier then my previous tires and that has made a bit of a difference. I plan to panic stop at the exact intersection on my way home to see if things change with the new tires. Either way I will post up my observations.

ps I can tell you the nose dive changed significantly after I removed the XREAS suspension and installed the TRD Suspension.

Here is my old thread and if you search there are a couple more threads you can read about it.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way off-road. When you're on loose sand/gravel/whatever, there are times when you need it to dig in when you hit the brakes, and the ABS doesn't let it.

You could certainly have an electronic issue, whether software or hardware - that would cause the ABS to cut brake pressure and have no brake function. The ABS does exactly that when it's activated. If the solenoid response time or latency in some part of the ecu or signal were having issues, it would result in no brake pressure at the caliper and no brakes as a result.

Totally agree / get that. Although I haven't had the opportunity yet to try crawl control mode / speed and the terrain select options I'm thinking ( in this particular model ) that using these options the software will lock whatever wheel it needs to in order to keep the vehicle on track / pitch / yaw whatever you're doing. I suppose disabling ABS is more for the highly experienced off roader - I know the Jeep guys simply pull a fuse or relay under the hood which kills it all ( but would probably disable everything else on my vehicle with it ).

Hell I installed an after market gas cap when I got the truck ( quality unit, locking cap ). Within a drive cycle the damn cpu killed everything on a restart, dash lit up every option possible. Drove perfectly fine otherwise LoL. So I guess you can do it that way! Toyota Tech asked me two questions when I dropped in to have it scanned, what kind of gas is it running and is the oem gas cap still on it? its more than the idiot lights on, everything goes into disable mode. So uhh, yeah - we cleared it through the OBDII port and put the stock cap back on :bolt:

Still waiting to hear back from Corporate Toyota. Drove it over the weekend with a master tech with diagnostics running but nothing happened. The tech told me there is another 5th generation in the system with similar problems.

Thank you everyone for your input. But nothing explains to me why a modern vehicle would stall after a braking abnormality. Nor could the tech explain it.

He related the first problem to the car going into "limp" mode which clears out after a little while and may or may not been related to the throttle body.

The second event they were able to get codes for the throttle body and replaced it.

The third who knows, maybe an electrical ghost. I'm not waiting for a 4th.

For now just wait and see what Toyota comes back with

So far he's had the following defects:
2015 (new car)
Vehicle won't rev when gas is pressed. Multiple CEL including Throttle Body.
Dealer says there is no issue? No follow up?

2017 (8k miles)
Brakes went to floor (Hydraulic/mechanical failure.
Brakes locked up (No ABS, electrical failure)
Dealer says there is no issue? No follow up?

Well there’s any interesting summary.
In high school I worked in a service dept at a Chrysler dealership. I remember there was this lady that would her green Sebring convertible in at least weekly for various complaints from engine shutter to brakes to whatever. And nothing could ever be duplicated. Maybe it’s a driver brain processing failure.

Did you ever figure out what was wrong? I have a 2020 TRD Off Road all stock and a very similar issue happened to both me and my wife in the car 3 times. Pedal randomly went to the floor, no braking, then started working again. Luckily we did not hit anything. Dealer says the car recorded the emergency braking system going off all 3 times, but that usually has lights and alarms going off which did not happen. Pretty concerning!

My 2020 4Runner is in the shop now with this same exact issue. Very concerned and not sure what to expect out of this. Motor blows up and worst happens is I am stuck and need of a lift. Worst case scenario with failure on brakes?

I would immediately call Toyota customer service and request to escalate your problem and file a case. I ended up escalating with Toyota Corporate and they were apparently able to eventually duplicate the issue. According to the dealer, they can not pin point the issue, but are replacing the entire braking system and are sending the old parts to japan to further investigate. I agree it is very concerning. Hope that helps with your situation.

Been studying what I just bought. 2021 Limited.
Lots of info here.
Of course lots of not

Sorry for this lane post but trying to get unlocked, so I can ask my questions.
New here and new to 4Runner.
On #7 now. Looks like impossible to meet and greet everyone.
8more posts to go.
wish me luck.

They were able to duplicate. Let see where this goes....
