Those with 285 tires

Hi I just installed OME shocks all the way around with 895 up front with superflexes in the rear. Got about 2-2.5 inch lift front and back. My initial measurements werent great. Anyway going to try some 285/70/17 tires tomorrow and was wondering from experience of others if I'm better off getting new wheels too. We've been looking at wheels anyway. Just hoping you guys have some input on whether changing the offset/backspace from stock wheels either way will help in avoiding rubbing on either side. Thanks.

With the 285's on stock wheels and no wheel spacers, you'll probably rub the UCA. Moving the wheels outward (whether with spacers or new wheels with different offset) will solve that, but you'll need to do a bunch of trimming around the front wheel wells to run 285's regardless of the effective offset of your wheels. Plan on moving the fender liners forward, trimming the back corners of the front bumper, removing the front mud flaps, and you might need a body mount chop.

Thanks for the reply. Well in order to avoid all that in the Sticky for "suspension/lift FAQ" it says that with a 3/2 lift 275/70/17 will fit without requiring modification. Is the minimal difference between these two tire sizes worth all the trimming?

Well… I'll tell you that if the DuraTrac came in a 275, that's what I would've gone with, but I don't regret going up to 285's. I wanted an aggressive looking tire, but needed something that would perform well on icy roads.

Well, it's unfortunate that you went with the OME shocks, instead of Bilstein 5100's as with the Bilsteins, you could get the front end up to 3". That being said, with your current lift, you are going to have to do a little trimming with 275's and aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers. Shoot, when I installed my spacer lift (which gave me 2" of lift) and my KMC wheels (-12mm offset) with 265/70's, I had to trim the front mud flaps and push the fender liners forward. Now, with my Toytec Ultimate lift (about 3 1/4" of lift), 285's and the same KMC wheels, I had to completely remove the front mud flaps and do the body mount chop!

I just switched from a 265/70 tire with a 31.8" diameter to a 285/70 with 32.76 diameter. My wheels have less backspacing and lower offset than the stock ones. I have no issues with the front of the tire due to having an aftermarket bumper. My mud flaps are gone, but I still have some rubbing I'm trying to locate when I reverse. I'm only lifted 2" in the front, but I need to get around to raising my coilovers up which may solve the rubbing. If not a little rubbing while reversing is ok with me.

xpeppyx, I can tell you right now, the backside of your front tires are rubbing against the body mount. It's body-mount-chop time for you!

Thanks for the links and info preacher35. This morning I took a look and it's just my driver side that makes contact with the mount and flair. It's just barely touching. I'm going to try raising my coilovers a 1/2" to 3/4" and get a new alignment before I do any chopping. My alignment guy back in GA was a genius with track cars, but probably didn't do much with lifted suspensions. He wasn't able to get the castor to where I feel it should be with my UCA's. If I can find someone here in Colorado that can get my castor within spec I think I should be fine with no rubbing.

My drivers side castor is 2.1 degrees while passenger side is 2.3 degrees. I was impressed that he managed 0 degrees camber on both sides.

IMO people running 285/70/17 tires DO NOT need a body mount chop. If running 285/75/17 yes you do.

I have 285/70/17 with aggressive BFG KM2 and never rubbed the body mount. If you rub the body mount get an alignment and set your caster + degrees.

Good to hear your experiences. I'm actually getting plastic trimmed in about an hour at my local shop. They doing it for free. I'm hoping that is sufficient with my lift. Is there any rubbing when you off road?

I only run in the rear when the tire is stuffed while off road.

I had to cut the edges of the bottom front bumper off and push the front fender liner forward as much as possible.

Prior to my new wheels I was running 2012 4Runner wheels and I was rubbing on my UCA and sway bar at full clock. After new wheels I don't rub at all in the front.

How much caster do you have? My passenger side caster is a touch less than the driver side and I rub the body mount… passenger side only at close to full lock and mostly in reverse. I'm thinking that if I have my alignment shop work on getting the passenger side to match the driver side, I'll be fine.

Well, opinion or not, I'm running 285/70/17 Goodyear Dura Tracs on -12 offset wheels with a Toytec Ultimate lift kit, Light Racing UCA's and Caster at spec and my tires rub on the body mounts when backing out of the driveway and steering wheel cranked around to the left OR right.

A little update from my experience thus far, been busy with various things including getting these tires on. The rears went on with no rubbing at all. Removed all mud flaps prior to install so not sure if they would have rubbed the rear mudflaps. The fronts wouldn't go on without touching the upper control arm. Pretty sure that's what it's called. Put on a 1/4 inch spacer as a temporary fix. Had my local shop trim the front wheel well behind the fender as that was rubbing pretty bad. Havent trimmed the fender at all yet and after about 20 miles. The shop that put on my shocks/springs has that Hawkeye digital alignment so they did a really good job. I could just run with it as is because there is no rubbing. I tried most of the day to get it to rub by slamming into any dip, shopping center entrance or speed bumb I could. I don't like having a wheel spacer so we are getting new wheels. We still have the stock 17's. Getting Black Rock steelies with a 0 offset so that should negate the need for a spacer. Might need to trim some fender after the wheels get on but we'll see. Other than that love the look and the ride so far.

So update with photos. Couldnt be happier with the ride and look of this setup. Was shopping for best deal on several tires I was interested in but in the end talked Big 0 tires down to $170 a tire for Terra Grappler 2's. Still running 1/4 inch spacers on the front. Might just stick with them as new wheels with the right offset and specs are hard to find. I don't see a 1/4 inch slide on spacer as a big deal. No rubbing at all right now. Added a yakima megawarrior this week. May add lights down the road we'll see. Gonna pump the brakes on upgrades for a bit as it gets addicting lol.

Hi, so what tire size did you end up with here? In the same situation now as you were back then.
