I use it once a week(before covid) to do a carpool to my son's middle school. Other than that I am like most others and probably only use it a couple times a year.
I wouldn't have a 4runner if it didn't have the 3rd row options since it was my wife's requirement for a new car.
It doesn't bug me that much since it basically raises the flow up 6 inches when folding down. When I go camping I don't pack completely up to the ceiling so do not actually lose space. Main thing that annoys me is they limit the option to SR5 for no reason, I would of wanted an ORP for the rear locker and crawl control.

Have it but have never had a use for it yet. Only have one kid and we've called it a day at one so unless kiddo takes up a sport that requires more seating, I don't think we'll ever use it. I like having it as a just in case.

8 year old 2012 SR5 and never used it once. But I don't have a need for it either.
it was the last one on the lot of that model year and it was either that one or a 2013 which I didn't want. The 2012 SR5 retains the transfer case shift lever which I prefer over the knob among other things like end of model year pricing.

My '11 SR5 came with 3rd row seating and I removed them shortly after I bought it. Man are those heavy! I built a box with a lid to store random stuff.
I may put the seats back in some day, as we now have a 2yr old and 1yr old. Driving out on the ORV beach/ trails with anyone besides the 4 of us would require having those 3rd row seats.
The FJ cruiser back mat came out of a total loss.

Other than being heavy, was it a difficult task to remove them? I like the idea of extra storage, less weight in the rear.
As to the primary question posed by this thread, I bought my ‘18 SR5 used last year and it is equipped with the 3rd row. If it were a new purchase, I would have chosen a 2 row model.
That said, I did use the 3rd row on one occasion, one small middle age adult. Myself, he, his wife and two others travelled two hours each way via interstate at legal speeds of 80 mph. He declared the seat comfortable and he enjoyed his time back there in his own world listening to music from the truck’s stereo with the fader tuned to put all the music in back so everyone up front could converse.
Otherwise, I imagine it would take imagination to utilize the 3rd row on a shopping trip, as upright allows zero space for anything. And with one’s head against the back window, I’d hate to be back there in a rear ender by a lifted full size pickup.

Not that difficult, each seat is held with 4 bolts. I did a how to on how to with pics on how to remove them here.

Not really... Which really irks me since I tried for 8 months to persuade my wife to opt for a TRDP. I make arguments to persuade for a living, and I still lost that battle. Now we have a 3rd row that we'll use twice a year on the off chance that a cousin wants to come over and play. These are deep, deep wounds. Thank you for listening.

I use it quite a bit, it was a requirement of my new vehicle. I have 3 kids and as they get older they will want their friends ride with them. I don't use it a lot, but I'm so happy it's there when I need it. I got a full roof rack in case I need gear and the 3rd row.
It's not really comfortable for a full size adult. I only use when there are extra kids around.
However, I prefer the third row for a few reasons.
The last one is, you prank your 6'1 buddy that just got off a plan, and tell him the second row is stuck flat right before a 4 hour road trip. Guess you'll have to sit back there.
However, I prefer the third row for a few reasons.
- The back of the 4runner is flat with the third row.
- The 2nd row seat movement is better. You pull a lever and they lay flat in addition to slide. No flip, pull or tuck, just flatten it out.
- You can use the space underneath for storage.

This should be a factory option. Way more useful than the sliding tray and the floor of the back is still flat.

Seems like a high percentage of us with 3rd rows are due to spousal insistence. Personally I don't mind too much, but definitely would not have gotten them if the decision was mine.
