Thought of putting the 4.0 in.

As we all know the FJ has the 4.0 in it, and its a pretty good engine. I'm wondering if you would be able to order just the whole drive train from the dealership new probably would be easier to get a wreaked one, just want to know if anyone would recommend doing it? Might be something to do later on. Give me your .02 cents haha.

Its a good engine and I've had this wicked idea of getting an older late 80's 90's Truck/Tacoma or 1st Gen 4Runner and shoehorning a 4.0L 4WD Drivetrain out of a Manual FJ Cruiser.

But you'll need to get the PCM and wiring harness and figure out how to make it all work. It is a CAN vehicle so you will probably run into some issues when trying to get it running and I'm not entirely sure how you well you'll do running a different transmission/transfer case set-up without some stand alone stuff.

Its doable though, be interested in the write-up if you plan on going through with it.

I do have to say that I've got both the FJ and a 99runner and after driving the runner for a while I will hop into the FJ and it will surprise me on how much faster it is.

New drive train with engine from Toyota. I bet the price would be like $20,000 :sorry:

Forget the 4.0. The 4.7 are easy to get and they are way more fun to drive. I have 4 4Runners. One is a 4cyl, one is a 2013 4.0 and two are the 4.7....

Most people that tell you there is o diff between the 4.7 and 4.0 either have no experience and are only reading base HP numbers or they want it to be true.
My silver 4th gen is my DD... But when I get home from work and hop in the 2013 it is NIGHT & day....

I said all that o say this....the 4.7 are cheaper, more avail, don't warp heads, have more torque, have been used longer and generally is a better choice.

Remember you asked for my two cents. :ranger:

either way..... be sure to keep us posted....
I am another vote that if you are going to do it, look for a used one. I bet you could easily find a older fj that has been totaled online from soem one whoe is trying to get something out of their loss..... Motors from toyota are cracked out high price expensive brand new. I do love the 4.7 just from driving it in work trucks, and they sure run for ever with that said, keep your eyes open on the interwebs for a wrecked truck.
either way good luck!

All nice thoughts, but my motto is I drive it you don't haha, I've had the thought at the very back of my head to go diesel too beings I'm am Engineman in the Navy and diesel runs in my blood, but I'm not sure which swap would be easier? The 4.0, or the 4.7? And I'll defiantly do a write up if i do end up doing it.

Well I haven't seen anybody swap the 4.0 in (not to say it hasn't been done).

However, Singtoe has swapped the 4.7 and has thoroughly documented his swap and he's an active member of the board, so you could ask him questions as you go. That alone makes the 4.7 sound like a much more viable option in my mind.

I think with either option the challenge would be in the electronics and making everything work properly.

To be completely honest, the 1GR motor is not and never will be even close to as well built and reliable as a 200k mile 5VZ. Take it from a guy working in dealership service departments all his life.
If you want more power, look into gears. 4.88's with stock tires make these things bullets. If you need more than that look into the supercharger kit. If you need-- WANT more than that, look up Singtoe and his UZ swapped Runner.

If diesel is in your blood swap in the D4D.

or

Do the 4.7 like Liny mentioned.

I've made up my mind, I'm more then likely going to do the 4.7, singtoe has the greatest write up and lots of info. So if I ever get my house I'm going to start getting ready to do it.

Easy there Liny. I do agree that the 3.4 is a GREAT motor, I'd venture to say my favorite Toyota motor to date reliability/power wise but the 1GR is also a fantastic motor. There are plenty of 4.0 with 200-300k+ no problem. There's a 4th gen 4runner on this forum with 500k miles on the original motor/tranny. That's a whole topic in itself though lol.

Also like Liny said if you are not happy with the power regear and add a S/C. I was very happy with my 4.88's. You can only expect so much power out of a 4wd yota and the gears/sc should get you there.
