Thought of putting the 4.0 in.

Easy there Liny. I do agree that the 3.4 is a GREAT motor, I'd venture to say my favorite Toyota motor to date reliability/power wise but the 1GR is also a fantastic motor. There are plenty of 4.0 with 200-300k+ no problem. There's a 4th gen 4runner on this forum with 500k miles on the original motor/tranny. That's a whole topic in itself though lol.

Also like Liny said if you are not happy with the power regear and add a S/C. I was very happy with my 4.88's. You can only expect so much power out of a 4wd yota and the gears/sc should get you there.

I didn't mean any offence, brother...it's not a bad engine, it just doesnt have the prestige or legacy of the 5VZ...but at the dealership I've seen a few head gasket problems in the 200-250k range, enough to steer me away from the engine.
But as a generality, the 5VZ is one of the best engines Toyota ever built, second only to the legendary 22RE

Yeah I think I am going to stick with the 2UZ, as I have said Singtoe has a great writeup and im going to base it off his write up. :thumb:

Still looking up 4.7s just a small update, I've been searching and searching with not much luck...salvage yards aren't really providing much other then more leads with dead ends, but I've seen more 4.0 v6s then 4.7s...

A friend of mine swapped his 3.4 for the 4.0(due to class spec rules) when it blew up in baja. Pretty solid motor IMO

After owning 2 LS400's with different versions of the 1UZ-FE (one vvt-i, one not), I have to say the UZ series motors are great motors. They're easy to work on, and they're very reliable and strong. In fact, in my 98 I hardly ever took it over 2k rpms when driving around town because of the massive low end torque... now the 4.7? I wouldn't even question it.. just do it

What about a good ol' 4bt? Easily the most swapped diesel motor out there, in all kinds of vehicles.

why the 4.7, why not the 2UR-GSE.

if only we could fit a 1LR-GUE in a 4runner

I think you are pretty set on the 4.7 so I won't suggest any other motors. Go for it, the swap Singtoe did was sick. I would love to see another 3rd gen V8 build.

There should be a new policy on t4r.org. If anyone plans to do anything new/cool to their runner, just say "YES" "GOOD IDEA!" or "That'll definitely work!" That way we can see some cool stuff.

Nah, I know ya'll are trying to be helpful. Anything is possible if you have the time/money for it. The 4.0 would be cool, but I'd imagine there would be quite a bit of custom fab work involved. Same goes for any engine that doesn't come stock. Sounds like your mind is made up. I'll be lookin out for your build thread.

Yup, best bet is an LS motor or even and 5.0 out of an old fox body or SN-95 mustang. Tons of aftermarket support for them too.

Thats what I was thinking. I'd imagine the whole wiring issue would be much easier. Maybe throw the nv4500 underneath and it would be unstoppable.

What all needs to be done for the 4bt? And where would I be able to find one?

4BT 3.9 cummins engine

I'm sure you can find one much cheaper, that was just the first one I saw in your area. Then grab the 5speed NV4500 trans, make some engine mounts, get a computer that will run the diesel, wire it up. It would be a project for sure but if you're gonna spend the time to swap a entire new drivetrain in, why not go all out? Your gonna need a lift too from what I'm reading.

Yeah I've seen those, I think I'm more then likely going to stick with the v8 possibly the 4.0 v6 from an FJC with a manual tranny.

Registered in Texas;)

Apparently it's smog legal in CA if you maintain all the smog equipment off the vehicle you took the engine from, if you take an engine from a truck, it must be put into a truck, and the last one is the engine must be newer then the vehicle you're putting it in.

I'm not so sure what you mean? In Texas it doesn't really matter when you're swapping engines asides from the engine needing to newer then the car you're putting it into, are you saying if the car I take it from is registered in CA that it has to maintain the smog equipment?

If you register the car in CA it has to maintain smog equipment. That's how certain engine swaps in CA are legal.
