Thoughts on this 3rd gen for sale?

Hey all,

What do you think of this 3rd gen, I have not seen it in person yet because its a 3-4 hour drive for me. My only real concern before I take the drive is the rust on the frame. Carfax says it lived in the east coast for about 5 years at the start of its life, then over to CA.

Its more than I want to pay for sure, but seems relatively clean except for the rust issue, and its got low miles. Honest opinions, go!

first thing i did when i moved from NY was to trade in my Tacoma, didn't want to deal with rust.
that being said it is worth checking out, though for that price i would have expected to see an E-locker (not sure if they were around still in '02)

How long have you been looking? Seem like you could get a comparable one for $6500-7k

Yeah if I could get it for 7k I would take it probably, assuming it looks good in person and drives decent.

One question, what is going on with the door jam area?? Am i seeing things or did someone try to slam the door shut with the seatbelt in the way like 50 times?

More like someone tried to pry open the door. I would not be surprised if the edges of the door are slightly bent as well.

The rust isn't terrible, but it is there. You could use that as a bargaining tool. $10k is too much, but it's a dealer so you will pay more. If you could talk them down to $8k, maybe... but that would still be pricey. If you are patient you could find an equally nice one from a private party for less.

Looks pretty clean but 10k is way too much money. The rust doesn't look terrible but you would have to look closer at it to make sure it is structurally sound. It has relatively "low" miles but its not like it has 80k miles on it.

I wouldn't pay anything over $7,000 for it and that would only be if it drove great with no known issues.

I have these on all doors. Really bad in the rear. It's from my kids slamming door on the seat belts. The steel is really weak and even small for slams cause damage.

@OP - if I was paying close to $10k for one of these, I'd want matched, non-crap brand tires, a stack of receipts, and that rust at the rear lower control arm attachment point looked at. These rust from the inside out, usually right there. It's probably fine, but you can never be too careful.

TL;DR this is a $5-7k truck depending on maintenance documentation.

I bought my '99 4WD a little over 2 years ago (basically the same as buying an '02 now) for $8999 from a dealer. One owner, 108k miles and near perfect condition. I probably overpaid, but I knew I would be hard pressed to find another one like it.

I agree this one seems a little high. Being in CA you should be able to find one in great shape and/or with mods for $10k if you expand your search to AZ, NV, etc.

That's a totally insane amount of money! In Canada these trucks sell for more than in the US. There is only a few reasons a 3rd gen might be worth that much--- modded and SC'd and or perfect condition with NO rust and low miles! 4 yrs ago when I was shopping for mine, I found one such truck, they were asking $10k, again, 4yrs ago!
