Throttle Position Sensor

Anyone know where I can get a TPS without having to buy the whole ThrottleBody. This is for a Toyota 4runner 2001 Limited Edition. The dealer said they dont sell the sensor by itself. That I had to buy the whole TB which I think is total nonsense. Any help is appreciated. Part# 89452-35030. Thanks

I think I've read on here that with 2001-2002 4runners you have to replace the whole throttle body because of a design change in 2001. But, pre-2001 4runners you can just replace the TPS. Someone else chime in to confirm?
 
See I bought this part from the dealer just to see if it would work but this is a 3 prong sensor and the one on my 4runner is a 4 prong sensor. Sensor will not work on the vehicle. I was able to return the 35020 since I didnt install it.
 
glad you were able to return it ... man that sounds annoying - i don't know why they would make a change in 01 to make the TPS only part of an expensive assembly like that. I wonder if they continued that trend with 4th gens or went back to an individual TPS part.
 
Did any of you guys ever track down a 4-prong TPS with part number 89452-35030? I was also told that my throttle issue required an entirely new throttle body.

Well, the reason has to do with the major redesign that was the change to throttle-by-wire in '01 and '02. Why that made it so the TPS could not be sold separately is a mystery, however.

Alibaba offers the 89452-35030, but it's Chinese manufacture and you have to buy five of them, minimum. It does have the four prongs.

The drive by wire has a stepper motor (4 wire) positioner in place of the resistor feedback of the older design.

And being drive by wire there is calibration and setup between the throttle plate and step positioner to ensure it is setup properly and safe.
 
Me Too! 2002 Limted TPS

My 02 limited has only 60k miles on it, accelerating from a rolling stop there is a major hesitation especially in 4 wheel drive. Contacted Toyota dealer yes...same as other posts it is a 4 prong TPS and must buy the throttle assy at $1000 and more to install, looking on the posts here I am in the process of buying through the Alibaba site, the smallest qty to purchase is 5 but much cheaper than dealer...wish me luck!!
 
isn't this something that could be picked up at a junkyard? as long as the vehicle didn't have a ton a miles. i have an 02 and the TB is on my "to get" list for junkyard parts, just in case something goes wrong in the future.

Yes, junkyard and/or Ebay. I used to sell used 01-02 assemblies because the dealership prices are outrageous for this part. That and the brake booster assembly.
 
I have an 01 that was built in 00. I get really confused when calling Toyota. I just replaced my TPS, bought one from eBay. My 4Runner is still having a lot of hesitation when accelerating. Could I have bought a bad TPS?

The TPS has a very specific position it needs to be in in order to work correctly. You'll need to ensure the sensor is engaged correctly and then rotate it to the desired throttle position. It pre-loads the sensor so that when you step on the gas, it can see the throttle position accurately.

It's very difficult to adjust a drive by wire TPS though. Much easier with a cable driven throttle. The FSM has no procedure on how to do it since it's considered a non-serviceable part, good luck!

I had an iddle problem with my 2002 4Runner, Installed this part and now the iddle is just perfect:
 
I believe my 4Runner is cable driven? We just replaced throttle cable and transmission cable. The 4Runner is running terribly after these cable replacements. Surging at idle and hesitation when pressing gas pedal

Are you sure you have an 01? Sounds like you have a 2000 then.

The cable should not have any slack or play, but the throttle valve needs to be shut 100% when you let off the gas. Is it routed correctly and not being pinched?

You replaced the transmission cable though? I wasn't aware that 2000 have a transmission kick-down cable. Are you sure it wasn't the cruise control cable?

Thanks for the clarification. Hard to keep straight all the changed over the years, photos go a long way in this case! I've owned a 2002, 1998 and 1999 model years so a bit of a gap in my mind for 2000 models.
