Throw out bearing clip

Which way is this clip supposed to go?
Im finding examples of both.

I have never done a clutch on a 4runner. Here is a pic from 99 Tacoma from reddit. Hope'it helps.

I've looked through a part diagrams and the Toyota service manual, neither of them detail the orientation. When I did my 5-speed swap I don't remember there being any confusion which way the clip went on. I believe it is Option 1, only because it wraps around the throw-out bearing, seems more secure that way. The clutch fork needs to rotate slightly on the throw-out bearing when it engages and disengages, so try that with both orientations and tug on it a bit and see how secure it is. Good luck.

Option 1 is the way. I just did one on my 3RZ and the fork and throw out are designed similarly.

So just confirming…Option 1 is the correct orientation of the throw out bearing retaining clip? I’m. It not finding many pics of this out there. Thanks!!

For entertainment, here are 3 different retainers I got too. I didn’t know the bearing came with a retaining ring, so I ordered one and they actually sent 2. Anyways, they all seem to work, but I’m just curious about the orientation since I watched a video and they installed using Option 2 and that doesn’t feel as secure to me.

I am doing this same job right now. I beleive option 1 is the correct one, but i also found both suggestions out there. i actually think both work, but I am going with option 1. I can't even find this info the Toyota FSM !!:noidea:
