Thunk noise when slowing down around 10-15 mph

So I recently bought a 2000 4runner 3.4 4x4 auto trans and have noticed that when I am slowing down to around 10-15 mph there is a thunk coming from around the transfer case area. Like something is un-engaging almost? The noise isn't super loud but is very noticeable. Anyone have any ideas?

Probably the AT downshifting. Check your fluid condition/level. Mine does the same thing when coasting to a stop.
 
Also happens on my 2000. I've been mildly chasing it for a while. Changing tranny fluid didn't help, greasing the drive shaft & u-joints seemed to help a little. Changing diff/tx case fluids also seemed to help a little too but it's still there. All good things to do anyways, I've pretty much stopped worrying about it. Funny though all three of us have 2000's.
 
Not sure if I makes any difference but mine goes away once the tranny is warmed up but the first few stops it's always there.
 
Checked the AT fluid when I bought it acouple weeks ago and it looked fine. I'm thinking it is just the trans downshifting as PNW yota said above. I will grease and check the driveshafts when I do my next oil change in 800 miles and see if it improves. I don't think it's a U-joint though because there would be some kind of thunk or clud when accelerating also I think.
 
I've been experiencing this ever since I bought my 4Runner. I originally thought it was dry U-joints so I greased them but it didn't fully take care of the problem. It DID help a little bit though.
My only conclusion is that it has something to do with the transfer case when the truck is downshifting as said earlier in the thread. I found that shifting into neutral when slowing down gets rid of the clunk. It may not actually do anything but it definitely makes me feel better.
 
Im no expert but could it be a worn/tired tranny mount? The factory uses that soft/squishy rubber that can look intact but be worn.

I wonder if there are companies that make nice solid poly. mounts?
 
Check your u joints that fixed my problem with this. Also how fast are you stopping and is your 4runner lifted? If so it could be the drive shaft...
 
Ive greased all u joints and changed the transmission mounts the clunk is still there. I have a 2001 SR5 4runner 4x4 Auto trans. The clunk hapens at 'exactly 19mph' when slowing down normaly from around 35 mph or so or if I coast to a stop with out aplying breaks it also clunks but faintly. if I stop
very hard and sudently there is no clunk sound.Also if I brake on neutral there is no clunk as well.
Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this problem???
 
Did you grease the slip joint in the drive shaft? Lots of threads on the specific
grease that works the best, but I didn't use anything exotic.

This hints it might be transmission related - 19mph might be when the transmission shifts from OD/4th down to 3rd. Check your transmission and motor mounts...

Also try slowing down with OD off and with the shifter in the "2" position.

Maybe check the rear axle control arm bushings? What if when the transmission is downshifting causing the rear axle to move a little and giving you the noise? Just something to look at , you know ?
 
So I tried the shifter position on "2" with the OD on then off as Charlie stated and no clunk at all
Also tried on "D" position with the OD off and no clunk at all as well, What does this mean exactly??
