4.7 v8 under acceleration I have a ticking sound ... Bothering the crap outta me! Ideas?????

Sounds like your exhaust manifold is cracked.

So do I need a new manifold or would changing to aftermarket headers and new gaskets work??

Yes ticks then warms up goes away then comes on after acceleration! ... Strange

Don't get the oem manifolds, buy the Doug thorley manifolds/headers to fix the noise and also get more power.

Welcome to the 4runner v8 club! I just purchased the Doug Thorley manifold and had it installed at an exhaust shop. It took the tech 10 hours total to perform the repair and other shops at quoted me 19 hours.
They removed the defective leaking OEM manifold, installed the Doug Thorley header, welded two new Magnaflow cats to the headers, removed the secondary cats, and did all the pipe work. It cost me just under $1,200.00 for the exhaust shop work and a little over $600 for the Doug Thorley headers.
So be ready to pony up about $1,800 to fix the exhaust ticking sound. It will only get worse so you might as well fix it. The Doug Thorley headers have a lifetime warranty and better constructed than the OEM heads which all seem to fail between 40 to 70 thousand miles based on the posts I've read here.

I can't believe that - lots and lots of folks here have OEM manifolds w/o any cracking. I'm almost at 200k w/o any issues.
Reading Doug Thorley related threads it's easy to come to those conclusions.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you're going to take the time and expense of performing the repair, you might as well replace the defective part with something better. :lookout:

Before I come to this final conclusion ... I have 140k, could it be anything else like I said the ticking goes away after a minute or so ... But then when I go to accelerate like normal it has a ticking sound you can hear over the engine...
Then don't say that all seem to fail between 40-70k. I have almost 170k with no failure and personally do not know anyone that has had one fail. Sure they do, but only heard of it here on the forum.

My exhaust shop guy said he can bench it, reweld and strengthen existing welds ... Fixed out the door $298.00

Do those Doug headers fit a non vvt 03 v8 like the op has? I thought they are for 2005+ v8s.
DT did a second run just for 03 and 04 models.... It's discussed near the end of the header thread....

So he says he's done a ton of these Toyota cracked manifold jobs before (custom pipe shop for 25 years) and said they have been a success, so I figure $280 and it works is an awesome deal! If it doesn't then I see dt headers in my near future lol, just saying id rather pay $280 vs $ the quoted $480 he quoted me in labor for the headers install (planning on buying coilovers and gobi rack soon so don't wanna spend too much)
