Ticking noise behind dash in 4th gen

Can't figure out this sound!

Read through a couple different threads, and at first I thought this was an AC blower issue, but I popped the hood yesterday and captured this video. It seems like it could be an issue with a pump or the slave cylinder. This sound generally only comes on when it's warm, and the scratching/squeaking sound comes on every 5-10 seconds. It drives me CRAZY because you can hear it in the cabin and feel it on the brakes. Does anyone recognize this sound/issue? See video below:

Part numbers for the servos

I found the part numbers for the three different servos that are on the passenger side. I am not yet sure which one of mine is making this annoying sound, but I'm probably going to order the two on the right of the blower motor because that's where my ticking is coming from. The part numbers are items 7 and 9 on this link, and the part numbers are posted. Also, this particular website has worked out great for me in the past for order parts, their customer service was great. Hope having these part numbers helps others who are dealing with this issue. Great thread guys. Thanks for all your insights. Link here: https://parts.olathetoyota.com/auto...-trim/4-7l-v8-gas-engine/hvac-cat/heater-scat.

Third rear screw??!!

ThirdDeviation How in the world did you get the final screw out?
I can't even see a rear screw, but I've taken the front two out of the assembly that holds the servo in place. Can't get the servo out to repair it.

Mike is that you, Mike...Mike????.....sorry couldn't help myself, a little play on your username...:eyebrows:

I not sure if ThirdDeviation is going to reply, according to his profile he hasn't been on the forum since he post his above post.

That being said I can't answer your question but I seem to recall reading of others on the forum who have replaced/removed said servo and experienced the trouble of the rear screw and eventaully got it out but some didn't put it back in because of the trouble but some did get it back in, so if you do a search of the forum with the correct wording and a bit of reading you may find the answer you seek, or hopefully someone else may see you question and give you the answer.

Edit: I found this on another forum from a link in this topic, maybe it will help you...

"OP nails most of what you need to do. One thing that he leaves out is that it was quite difficult to remove the upper right screw of the servo housing to get it out. There is only about 2 inches width between the screw and some larger part of the A/C heating system [I think?]. The only way I could unscrew it was to hold a bit in there with my index finger on the middle part on back of it and my thumb on the end. In the other hand take a pair of needle nosers and start screwing downward, readjusting after each turn. This will test your patience. It only took a few minutes but felt like 20."

I might suggest using a pair of needle nose vise grips instead of regular needle nose, but basically a pair of pliers and a bit is going to be your best bet unless you can get a right angle screwdriver in there, which can be had at most any place that sells tools.

Oh, I feel like a horrible person. I totally forgot about this - agh.

I attached a photo of the mount with the servos. Are you talking about the bottom point (very bottom of the picture)? That stupid, awful thing is a nut on the end of a mounting bolt that feels almost exactly like a screw when you're lying on your back, contorted in half, trying to a get an angle on it. And, if I remember correctly, the mount extends all the way down to that point.

Then. THEN! There is a super-hidden part of the mount just above that nut that has tabs retaining it to the vent assembly. If you don't release these, it's almost impossible to pull the assembly out. Why's that, you ask? Just below the second servo is a point where some kind of alignment pin for the mount extends something like 3 inches into the cylindrical protrusion from the vent.

So, find the clip points, separate the tabs and pull the lower part of the mount away from the vent unit - towards the opposite side of the footwell - to get it out.

Even better, I come back today to realize that I replied to the thread with a picture I already used. I'm on fire right now.

mikeisspeaking Are you/did you try to pull the servo out as part of the larger bracket/mount to which it's attached, or just the bracket attached to the servo itself? To clarify, the black box has a metal mounting frame attached. That metal mounting frame is then screwed in to the larger white plastic bracket that is connected to the central venting behind the center of the dash.

I tried to remove just the metal bracket first, but found the rear screw so difficult to extract that I worried I wouldn't be able to get it back in place. Pulling the large plastic bracket took me almost as long as it took to get the servo's hidden (towards the engine bay) screw almost out, but swapping the servo and reinstalling almost no time at all, relatively.

I really do feel bad about dropping the ball on this - feel free to PM me if you need more specific help. I don't have time this weekend, but next weekend I can put together a quick-ish video covering the R&R process I used, if it's helpful.

Diving in tomorrow to knock this out.
Hadn't considered taking the housing of the housing of the servo out. Thanks a ton for the info. Really. Means a lot.

I don't know if this relevant to your issue, but I just pulled out my blower assembly to replace the upper of the two vent control servos.

I've had some ticking from behind my dash for years now. How many servos are actually in that area of the vehicle? I'm not sure which one is giving me trouble.

I don't have any obvious issues with no heat/cool, so I don't believe it is the blend door. How did you troubleshoot your system, and how difficult was the blower removal?
