Tie rod end and cv boot replacement on 2nd gen

The tie rod end is no big deal, but you should get an alignment done afterwards. It messes up your steering. The CV boot is doable in your driveway, but if you don't have air tools or at least decent mechanical ability you're best taking it somewhere because you have to remove the CV shaft. That means taking apart the hub and separating either the upper or lower ball joint. Your call; it's not difficult but it is messy (because of the grease) and time-consuming. A good time to repack the hubs though, if you haven't lately.

This job shouldn't be too hard. You'll need a tierod end tool, some people call them a pickle fork, it's about $15. And some wrenches or ratchet and sockets.
If your boot is split you may want to change out the axle ($60 from advance auto it's a refurbished axle with a new cv joint and boot) since there's a really good chance that the joint got dirt in it which will reduce the life span alot. I did mine because the joint was making noise. With the tierod off it shouldn't be too hard to pull the axle out. Pick up a Haynes manual and you should be all set.

Ditto. I learned the hard way a LONG time ago to always change the joint. If the boot is shot, the joint is going to go too.

I have noticed a split inner CV boot on one side so was planning on getting it replaced. Napa up here quoted me 180 bucks each side for the inner and outer boots!!!!
I just checked Rock Auto and they are showing around $65-$80 each side for a "CV Half Shaft". What is this exactly? The picture looks like it includes the whole shaft and both boots. Does this sound correct? Is Napa ripping me off?

If I buy the whole shaft from RockAuto is there somewhere/something I can do with the old shafts instead of just throwing them out? Do some places refurbish them? If so, do you think they might give me a little cash back?

Yea, half shaft is just that, both joints and the shaft in between. I always replace the entire half shaft. They are always rebuilt units and done on the cheap in mass quantities so the price is less than one would expect.

Ive done a few of them on cars, the center nut, hub nut? was a ***** on all of them, i had a tire place crack the nut loose and retighten with an impact drill, then i could get it back off and do the rest with normal handtools.

Oops, so my original quotes were a bit inaccurate. The shafts may only be 65 bucks each but shipping to Canada is about 50 bucks each also, so total cost for 2 shafts is around 260. Or I can buy the boots online for about 50 bucks including shipping.
Ill have to have a look around locally for re-furbished shafts and see if there is a place around here (at least in BC) where I can get them from.

If you're in Kelowna than you should find the closest border town in the US that you can drive to. It may be worth the drive to get parts especially if they want 180 each at NAPA in Kelowna.
Use google maps for the closest city in the USA and search auto parts, you'll probably find a NAPA and they have reasonable prices in the USA.
Or you can find a shipping service in the same city that you can use to ship your order from Rock Auto and then pick it up.
This is what I do but my city is right on the border so I cross about once a week anyway for the cheap gas.

Thanks for the tip, yeah its about a 3hr return trip to the border. Plus Im not canadian so its a hassle to cross the border. Gotta get out of the car going into the states, get car searched (90% of the time), go inside, fill in a green form, pay 6 bucks US, then I can cross.
Come to think of it it might have been the stealer who quoted the 180 each side for the CV's. Napa usually is pretty good up here in Canada as well. With most parts anyways. I found another site, canadapartsonline or something that had a full set, both sides, for under a $100.
