Time for new engine?

Well long story short took my 22re 4runner into a big mudd pit sucked mudd through my air filter and some went into engine. I ended up making it home 45 min away barely.
So i changed the oil twice in 24 hours , new spark plugs, new wires, new cap and rotor.
Still running very rough.
Next step is take off the head see how dirty it is? Maybe fixable?
The engine has 275k miles
I think the best bet would be to find a nice rebuilt engine and just put that in?
But if i got another engine i may want something with more power then the 22re if i can afford it?
I live in ca smog is strict what engine could i put in to still be steet legal 3.0 v6? 3.4 v6? Or even like a chevy 4.3?

No, you should have stayed out of the mud.

No idea what swaps would pass emissions in California, but if the 22RE was enough motor for you then I'd put a little effort into saving it before you do something drastic. Pull the head, drop the pan, see where things are at first, then make the choice to repair/replace/swap.

There's a couple different outfits in California that build a decent 22RE for not much money, check out Putneys for starters. I really want somebody to buy a Putneys stage 2.5 and tell me if they're worth it.

As I've always understood it, the rule for swaps (in emissions states, that is) is you must swap for an engine of the same or newer years, and it must have all emissions controls for that year. You must meet the emissions of the year your vehicle was built.

Check your mechanical timing. My last (and I mean my last) trip in the mud cause my timing to skip.

dont listen to the haters sayen stay out of the mud! just do it smarter..... i rebuildt my 22re ater i sucked water. it bent a push rod that broke a couple hun miles later. i wish i would of just invested in a swap. the 3.0 is a big nooooo! (no offence foot). the 3 4 is awesome, but i plan to go to the vortec 4.3. its a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off. cant beat that. keep all the 4 3 or 3 4 smog and youll be fine. good luk and get a snorkle.

If my 3.0 ever blows, I plan on doing the Voirtec 4.3 swap. But for now it runs just fine.

Thanks for the feedback i will most likey take it to the my local shop ask
Them to take apart the 22 re motor to see if its able to be rebuilt. But if not i am going to start to look for the chevy 4.3 or a fare price 3.4. Would i still be able to pass smog with that chevy 4.3?

The 22re is one hell of an engine, just low on ponies. My last one was bored .030 over, pretty ridiculous cam, some head porting and a long tube header. It would run 90+ on the highway with 33x10.50s or even get 20-23 mpg at a normal speed all on stock gearing. I would just invest in some performance upgrades to what it already a very reliable engine.

Just remember...with a stock air intake our trucks suck for water fording. Or hauling *** into a big mud hole.

We might as well rename it to "22R-Eliable"!

Ask those who have upgraded to bigger engines how hard it is to get to or see parts when you need to check or work on them.

What about a 22re turbo? I was talk to a shop near me they said that may be a good choice. How much more power would you get out of that turbo? 20hp?
