No, they dropped the imaginary V4 from the 5th gen for the '11 year.

If anything they might drop the engine from the Lexus 4runner (Don't remember the name). 4.6L and 310 HP seems good to me. Sadly though I think its a slim chance. Oddly though of all the 5th gens I have seen and driven all of them have been with the 1GR and not the taco 2.7L engine.

I will be happier if they just put in the Multi-mode 4wd system (similar to 2009 Trail Edition). For me, the Multi-mode 4wd system is far more useful than any V8.

for the 5th gens Brian-you could get a 4 cylinder in a 2wd version 4Runner but now it appears that will be only in the 2010 model year and not going forward.
I would be curious how many of those were even built and if anyone has ever seen one for sale at a dealership...

I concur. While I would still prefer a V8, the multi-mode system is first on my wish list for the 5th gen. The rear locker option with the multi-mode (as offered in the 2009 Trail) would be a great combination. Would also like to see the other small items returned - like the diversity antenna, locking gas door, etc. And get rid of the 20" wheels on the Limited.
Guess I should have jumped on a 2009 Trail instead of waiting to see wihat the 5th Gen offered.

dealers couldn't move a V8 when gas was at $5
I say bring it back along with multi mode 4wd. The 4.6 is more efficient.

Its the system that we have in V6 4th Gen - it allows for 2WD HI, 4WD HI or 4WD LO.
V8 4th Gens were only 4HI or 4LO.

Multi mode 4wd means that the system can be operated full time in 2wd or 4wd. The key component, which is missing in all but the Limited models of g5's is the Torsen center differential.
The GX 460 achieves 20 mpg highway. The 4.6L engine w/multi mode 4WD should get the same mpg's or better in a 4R.
