Time for tires and suspension. Need opinions/advice

nice looking 4runner, i am always in the shortpump area but have never seen you truck. seeing the pictures make me question if i should go with 5100 and fj springs or daystar spacer

Kevin, My girlfriend drives the truck most days. That's probably why you haven't seen it. If you want though I can arrange to meet up and you can have a look and drive it. Get a feel for the suspension and hopefully that will help you decide.

After checking on this forum, I got a set of FJ Cruiser 17 inch wheels with Goodyear Wrangler tires, 270 65 17. I understood that they would fit without any issues or rubbing.......well not exactly. The driver's side is rubbing on the bottom of the mud flap and on the protruding section of the fender liner directly behind the tire (driver's footwell area). I really like the FJ Wheels, but the rubbing is not acceptable, not to mention the really noisey goodyear tires. Is there a fix for running the 17s, with the 270 65 17s? Would switching to a 265 65 17 be a reasonable option? Can the rear fender liner be modified to allow me to use the 265 70 17? Thanks Phil

the stock wheels on my SR5 4WD were 265 70 16. I installed some 17 inch wheels off of a FJ Cruiser with 270 65 17 Goodyear tires on them. The front driver's side is rubbing on the protruding section of the fender well. Trying to figure out if I should just dump these wheels and tires or if there is a way to trim the fender liner. thanks Phil

Just push the fender liner forward. Most of us have done it when we went to larger tires.

I don't seem to be having issues with the front of the liner. My issue is to the rear of the tire on what would be the front side of the footwell. There is a popout on the liner about 3x3 inches. It also rubs on the very bottom of the mudflap. That would be an easy fix. What can be done with the box popout part. thanks phil

What does your alignment look like.

Can you post a picture of said pop out?

I forgot to mention many of us remove the mud flaps too

is this the area you are referring to as the pop out? if it is, 3 questions, is it stock height(no lift), how far out do the wheels stickout from the fender, & again, when was the last time u had an alignment?

I can't get a photo right now. As you face the front drivers side, it is on the right and about 8 inches to the inside from the outer edge of the wheel arch. It looks to be part of the wheel well liner aft of the tire. It is molded into the fender liner. About the size of a pack of cards. Phil

actually, yes, I just went down and took a look. That looks like the part that is rubbing. It looks like it is part of the mud flap. I assume that the mud flap can be removed without creating any issue. Correct? Phil

you could also just cut out the 3x3 section where it rubs but removing the MF completely should solve ur problem.

I took the 4runner over to a local shop to check the alignment. I knew that it was out, but didn't know that is was sooooo out. the toe in was consistent on both side, consistently way out. The inner tie rod end on the driver's side was also worn. They changed the inner tie rod end, did the alignment and what a difference. I thought that the steering was just the goodyear ats tires, not so. It now drives like a brand new truck. I was also able to reassess the tire rubbing. I will either remove the mud flaps completely or trim them today with the dremel tool Also, as was suggested by many of you, the tires were rubbing the front of the fender liner, I will move the liners forward as well. Great forum, tons of very useful info. Thanks to all of the contributors. Phil

Can you post up the shock dynos of these more affordable shocks that are 'almost identical' to the. 5100 rear shocks? This would really help future searchers save some $$.

yeah especially if they are $40 each. Probably need some rebate, coupon code, and a super secret handshake to get it at that price. Might require you to pickup from china warehouse

skip the lift...get some nice Bilstein HDs and throw a set of Michelin LTX M/S2s on there in the stock size. Upsizing tires makes it ride/drive like crap, with the heavier rotational inertia. Been there, done that. The car is still very capable as is...lifting and putting big tires reduces the quality of life, honestly.

I have bilstien 5100's and OME springs front and a daystar spacer in the rear. Combined with 33's, I can vouch that my ride is close to stock, if not better. The bilsteins really help reduce roll around corners and soak up the bumps great. Most people lift them to gain ground clearance, which the 4runner strongly lacks from the factory. Also, such a small increase in tire diameter (only an inch) will have little to no effect on the truck in the grand scheme of things.Maybe a 2-3 loss in MPG but that's it. What lift and tires did you use that made it drive like crap? Your choice of parts is what determines that.

Wow, really? I think my quality of life improved after moving up 4.5". Love the height, love the ride with the 33s, and it feels just like stock ride if not better. Maybe it's just me, in my mind that it rides the same. I come from a lifetime of lowered lifestyle. This is my first going up. Going down reduces your quality of life, honestly.
