Time to start over...

Well, that was a short run. Got my Runner 3 weeks ago & it's already time to find another. We were camped at Laguna Seca for a race this weekend and after a very long day of working the race we decided to pop into Monterey for dinner. All was well when we returned & parked for the night. About 45 minutes after we got back we heard our night security people yelling about a car on fire. About 10 of our crew sprinted up the hill only to find my brand new baby with the engine compartment fully involved. We only had two 5lb extinguishers, but we were able to at least slow it down until the fire crew arrived.
Looks like insurance is going to total it, now I just have to find out how much they will give me.
Needless to say, I'm pretty devastated. Time to start searching again!

Wow man that sucks. Sorry to hear that you only got enjoy your 4R for such a sort time. I actually almost bought that same 4runner in 2012 when I lived in Arroyo Grande lol. Good luck with your search to find another one!
 
As far as we can figure out the ignition switch or something in the starter circuit shorted out. Our security crew was about 50 feet away from it, and said it looked like the truck just drove into the fence. It was still in gear when we got to it. The only wiring damage I found inside the truck is the ignition switch is melted & so is the harness coming off of it. I'll probably never know for sure what caused it, that's just our best guess.
 
buy it back and part it out man. lots of good parts still on that think, and id probably be interested in some of them...

I might do that. Insurance adjuster is calling me tomorrow. Problem is time, we have to move at the end of the month...and it was my daily ride.
 
Thanks guys! Insurance adjuster looked at the truck & said that due to the amount of damage that I could not buy it back. So,
sadly, off it went on the flatbed! :nono:

Bull chit they can not do that its your truck you own it... That's called theft. Call them back and demand your truck back or you will go after them in court
 
Man that's terrible. I've never heard of someone not being able to buy it back. What insurance company do you have? Make sure if they aren't going to let you buy it they comp you for any mods, bumper, winch, etc that it had.

When I was 17 my grandpa gave me his truck and it burned up in my driveway one night about half an hour from the movie rental store. Never found out what caused it though.
 
I agree. I had my 98 considered totaled at 232k miles. Insurance paid me close to $7000 and I bought my 4runner back for under $1500. Daily driver but ya I'd for sure try and get it back to at least part out.
 
Can't buy it back? First time I've heard of that.

I'd call and talk to another adjuster and ask them to explain. That truck is easily savable - get a new engine harness, replace the melted sensors, damaged paint, etc. Should leave you enough money from the payout to buy some new toys for it.
 
It has to do with the amount of fire damage to the brakes & steering. I could buy it as scrap, or replace the parts on it with stock. I just don't have the time right now to deal with that.The insurance rules in Ca are like everything else here, a real pain in the ass! I have been with my insurance for more years than most on this board have been alive, and they have always done good by me. They pay fair market value (not blue book) plus they pay for accessories. Yes it is still my truck, no they have not stolen anything from me, and I'm not too worried about the outcome. I know my legal rights well as most of my family members work for LEO agencies or are in the legal field. I'm kind of the Black Sheep of the family being a mechanic.
All will work out!

Damn. How'd you get so much back for it totaled? Is that price within the KBB?
 
Amalik... Most good insurance companies do a fair market value or agreed value on older vehicles. They look at what they are selling for in your area & then average them out. They use AutoTrader, craigs list & DMV records etc to come up with the price. They realize thet KBB is pretty out of touch in the real world for older vehicles like ours.
 
Why didn't you take of the wheels, bumper and other parts ? Never heard of a situation where you COULDN'T keep the car.
