Timing Belt Change 2006 V8 Limited 4runner

There is a phenomenal mobile Japanese auto mechanic in my area that worked at dealerships for many years. He promises me that I don't have to worry about my timing belt on my 07 v8 until around 125k. He sounded pretty damn confident about it .
Take that for what it's worth.

I've heard the same thing. Doesn't surprise me knowing how low maintenance and durable the V8 engine is.

Gates Super Belt? Maybe?

I know its a "different engine" and really has nothing to do with a 4runner or any Toy at all for that matter its just a story to mention about a TB I changed and should tensioners being changed ? reminded me of this.
My freinds wife has a 2000 Chrysler 300, bought with 20k on it. A while back I asked if she ever changed her TB, she said "no didnt know it had one". So goes the explaining about interference/belts/pumps ect... I got the duuuhh look, you know it?..lol
Anyway'
I replaced her belt and wth? It looked absolutely new. Timing marks, wording [factory gates],teeth, everything like brand new. Of course it was badly stretched because the hyd tensioner was maxed out & completely seized up. Im talking 300+lbs of weight pushing it against a stone wall would'nt budge its rod. Have no idea how this belt was still riding those pullies but it ran fine, quiet. The car had over 170k. Not a frey/mark on that belt. Would most belts have failed? Who knows? Ive seen cars under 100k break in older GM's [late 80' early 90s'] most had easy miles on them I know, but hey thats a GM, its built to fail. She had every reciept on this 300 too, no belt/pump ever replaced on it. Chrysler emblems on it all.

I remind you again' not a toy,not a heavy truck nor ever pulled a thing. Very little highway miles, all city really. Might guess having curb weight 3300pnds??

I,ve bought nothing but gates belts since then. Gates water pumps Im not sure about? Anyone else?? Never saw a bad one but read about some going within 2yrs? Could be its design, defective, China?, wrong antifreeze shortening life since most people put green back in everything too who knows??? Ive installed several Gates Kits without seeing failure #1 yet. But' I will buy an OEM Toy pump for my own I do believe just to be safe I think? I still have 20k mi to decide but leaning that way? That belt will be a Gates, bet on that! New tensioner on it too...YES!

I know when I install older style gates V belts [no tensioner style] I rarely have to tighten them up again soon like other brands. Power steering goodyear on our Infiniti Ive tightened twice now with under 15k on it, its coming off next time if it needs it. I got it cheap...lol
Sorry, for long post, belt just amazed me I guess?

I have a 2006 Limited V8 with 101,000 miles on it and called around for estimates to change my timing belt, water pump, and flush/refill coolant and the local Toyota dealership gave me a better quote than local mechanics. The dealership quoted $768 and shop $1,253.00. The dealership wins this time!

I finally had my timing belt replaced along with the water pump (and all of the accompanying belts, etc.) and I told the tech I wanted him to keep the belt so I could see the wear on it since my rig has just over 127,000 miles on it! I know I should have done it earlier, but along with the above quote from Mike and reading other anecdotes on this site about the TB I wasn't worried to let it go a few extra miles. Well, you know what happens, 90k turns to 100k, "it's still fine, I won't change it until my next service", then that comes and goes and next thing I know I'm targeting 125k as the change date. 37k miles after the Toyota recommended maintenance and here are the pics of the belt. It looks brand new. The tech was surprised at first, then said, "But that's Toyota for you."

As you can see in the last pic, even when squeezed together, there aren't any hairline cracks or anything else I can see. That being said, glad I had it done finally, not that I was too worried about letting it go as long as I did. Peace of mind. This, of course, is just my own opinion and NOT a recommendation. I urge everyone to change their timing belt at the Toyota appointed mileage interval.

Had mine changed at 145k miles, belts and parts still looked good. I read a blog post where a guy replaced the original TB/WP on his neighbor's 1998 LC at 187k miles! That's Toyota quality.

Did my timing belt over the weekend....

Noob on the forum here, so forgive me if I'm reviving an old thread. I did a ton of research, watched videos and checked out the manual. I replaced the timing belt, water pump and crank seal.

It took a few days because I have 2 jobs, a newborn at home and sleep is non existent.

I checked all the marks 3x...4x and hand rotated the engine to verify the marks lined up and there was no issues.

I finally got it all back together and the moment of truth.

It fired right up, I did notice some "ticking" that I don't think was present before and then once the engine got up to temp, the throttle response is very delayed and there is a very loud air sucking sound on acceleration.

Any ideas where I went wrong? Is the belt off a tooth? did a MAP just happen to go bad at the same time?

thanks

Sounds to me like a vacuum hose got knocked loose, or one you may have forgotten to reconnect. Did you remember to reconnect the harness to your MAF sensor? I accidentally forgot to plug mine back in when I was doing some service on mine that required removing it. In my haste, I got in and fired it up and had similar symptoms to what you described. Sometimes it’s just a simple oversight like that...
