Is there a certain mileage point the timing belt needs to be changed in the 5th generations?

Keep an eye on it though, my Xterra had one go bad around 110k and they were never supposed to be replaced either.

Known issue with those engines. No known similar issues with the 1GR.

I think somewhere in Toyota literature there is a recommended timing chain swap around 400,000 miles. I'm not sure where, but I think both of the million mile tundras (there's at least two tundra's that have clocked over a million miles now) had their timing chains replaced around half way. They have a very similar timing chain.

It's usually the guides that wear out before the chain but haven't heard of any issues with these motors.

This is correct. Chains usually will either be fine or snap and be 100% not fine. The guides are the wear item and (not sure about this engine though) can typically be replaced without pulling the timing chain off the car

That's correct. I've got a stretched timing chain and probably will have to change the guide as well. I'm currently looking for the part numbers. There's a site I used in the past TRD Parts: catalog of OEM Toyota & Scion parts & accessories that's pretty good on pricing for OEM parts.

FYI the older Tundras with the 4.7L V8 have a timing belt with a 90K mile change interval.

I recently purchased a 2018 SR5 and was playing around with and programming the maintenance app in the Entune suite, using the maintenance manual as a guide to program reminders. I couldn't find anything about timing belt/water pump replacement, so figured there might be a chain. My 2002 Tacoma TRD V6 had a belt.

So, a logical question would be, is the water pump within the block? And if so, I suspect that would be a good time for inspection/guide replacement?
