Timing belt help needed

I just had a terribly long day with a buddy changing out the timing belt and water pump on my '06 V8 4Runner. We followed Blackwork's (his pics, I needed them to show what I was describing) writeup to t and it was great to show what to do but the job is such a nightmare with frozen bolts and tight working conditions.

Finally get everything all buttoned up and start the vehicle and it starts up fine but settles into a low, sputtering idle. Eventually the check engine light pops on and it's not good news. P0016 and P0018 - Crank Cam position correlation codes. Just a nightmare after such a long day.

The only thing I can think of that we did wrong (or right???) is that when we rotated the engine so white marks on the crank pulley lined up like this

Then the marks on the cam pulley were lined up perfectly with the "t" marking to the right of the straight line

Following the writeup and Toyota's field service manual, we rotated each cam pulley to lineup with the straight line marking.


Anyway, is it possible that the cam markings were supposed to be on the "t" mark instead of the straight line? I'm hoping that's the case as that's how the vehicle was when we took it apart, but I'm still dreading doing the timing belt all over again on Sunday.

I'm the 2nd owner and it's at 101k and the timing belt had never been done before. Thanks for any help, I need to get this thing up and running so I can get to work on Monday.

hi guys, just wanted to bring this to the top, I'm really stumped and need to get to working to retime the motor if that's what the problem really is.

Otherwise could it be a crank and/or cam sensor?
 
It's possible that it's a sensor but that's very unlikely in my opinion. I've never done a timing belt on this exact engine but I've done it on others. It definitely sounds like a cam/crank timing problem.

I think it is too, unfortunately i'm finding conflicting reports of where the crank pulley should be when the cam pulleys are lined up at the timing mark (the straight line)

Does anyone know forsure, should the crack pulley be lined up with the white dot on the plastic cover or at the "0" on that plastic cover?

Best way to check is to pop the crank pulley off again and line up the marks on the crank gear and the cam gears. Here is part 2 of a 3 part video I found that explains the process very well. I am pretty sure it should be lined up with the 0 mark. I dont like or know why they tell you to set it up on the white dot (50 degree mark) at all. Makes it confusing.

I had seen the video, yes I agree, having the numbers and the white dot on the timing cover makes things confusing.

EDIT - now I get it, the white dot is supposedly a neutral location so the cams won't move from valve spring pressure

Any chance you guys cut/broke/unplugged one of the sensors? I remember a member a while back did something similar.

We thought we might have but we tore into it again yesterday and every sensor and vacuum hose had been connected. It went better yesterday than Saturday since we didn't have to replace the water pump and none of the bolts were frozen on. We did put the timing belt back to how we took the original off, so the cam notches were on the "T" marks and the crank pulley was lined up on the white dot. I fired it up and it ran just like it did prior to us tearing into it on Saturday and to say I was extremely relieved would be an understatement.

Considering I was seeing conflicting info on how to line up the crank and cams, I figured why not put it back to the way that I KNOW it works. Thanks again for the writeup though, it was crucial for knowing what parts to get, the order to do work and size/location of bolts.

So considering it ran fine before with how the cams/crank were lined up am I losing anything (power, fuel economy) by installing the timing belt in the same way? The motor is plenty strong and I average about 17.5 mpg.

Your timing is off. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCTGHurWA1c. You should have it set at zero and line up with the dash marks.

Hadn't seen that video. The engine is put back together and running great but I will still check it out to see what its says.

EDIT - watched the video, wish I would have seen this prior to Saturday. Watching that video it is clear to me that when the crank mark is at 0 the cam notches should be at the straight line, and if the crank notch is at the white dot then the cam notches should be at the "t" marking.
