Timing belt kit recommendations

Hi there,
Need to replace the w/p on my wife's 1999 Limited 3.4 w/ 150k on it. Usually I do this kind of work myself but due to a new addition to the family, I don't have the time to devote to it in the near future and need it done ASAP. But I know a mechanic who works at a local dealership who has offered to do it on the side.

I would like some recommendations as to what kit to buy. YES I have searched and read through the forums, unfortunately most of the search results come up w/ old links to Ebay items that are no longer availible, and I want to make sure I get the most current kit recommended. There seems to be a range from $150-350 depending on where you look and what it includes. If someone could please send me a current link to a recommended kit I would apprecieate it. Obviously I would like to save money, however, this being the vehicle that will transport my wife and baby, I'd rather spend extra and get the best kit and save on the piece of mind and hopefully get another 100k out of it. I generally get my parts from RockAuto and haven't had any issues. I know this forum is big on Toyota OEM stuff, but I'm not familiar enough to know what is a junk japanese product from an OEM japanese product.

Second question. Most of the kits contain accessory belts, seals, etc. Is there anything that is NOT included in the standard kits that I should pick up? I've seen recommendations on radiator hoses (2 small ones under timing cover?), and an idler bolt. Anything else? I'd like to knock out as much stuff as possible while it is apart so I don't have to worry about it.

Thanks,
Dustin

NAPA's kit is the same manfuacturer as OE.

Timing belt kit w/ water pump

Seriously overpriced. Aircabinman's OE kit is a much better deal, same stuff, more pieces, less $$.

The one item no kit seems to include is the one-use only (per FSM) crank pulley bolt. This is a mission-critical part and one I got from the stealer for peace of mind. Lots of people slather on the LocTite and call it good. Your call.

I just completed an engine swap and when I had the engine on a stand I did the full meal deal. I ordered the Aisin kit AISIN Part # TKT025, from Rock Auto $180US, before shipping. Went in fast and easy. Aisin is the OEM supplier. Definitely get a kit with the tensioner, as it makes the job easier. If you consider doing this yourself, and since you have to drain the cooling system, I strongly recommend pulling the rad, as it will give you lots of room to work--- this really isn't a difficult job if you organize yourself (ie go through the procedure and have the tools at hand-- torque wrench etc), give yourself room and clean. The kit I quoted has everything required--- tensioner, 2 idler pulleys, WP, gasket, seal for thermostat, and belt. There are no hoses under the TB cover. Get some gasket compound so when you replace the covers you can run a bead along the covers to provide a splash seal... Also you need a 19mm socket and breaker bar for the main crank pulley. Good luck!

I've used the AirCabinMan kit in the past. Solid kit, all OEM parts. The crank bolt is the only thing I'd add to it.

Good luck and congrats on the baby!

I just installed that same kit a couple weeks ago but I re-used the old crank bolt. Do you think it's something I should worry about at this point?

The water pump and water pump gasket are Aisin OE in his most expensive 3.4 / V6 kit... Not Toyota. Has it been OK for you?

Aisin is the OE for the WP. Has the updated metal gasket with the embossed sealant. Much better than the paper gasket with separate sealant. That TBK kit on Amazon looks nice too. I probably would have bought that if I didn't have a bunch of Ebay bucks I needed to use.

Yes MITSUBOSHI is an OE manufacturer. It had the LF and RF and CS arrows on it. Lines up perfectly and fit the pulleys perfectly.

Not bad, but I would spend a few more bucks for the OEM part personally. It's not like every month the rig hits 100k in terms of this maintenance job.

I think you're missing what he's saying. The OEM parts AREN'T Toyota parts. Other manufacturers make the parts for Toyota.

Not just the parts, but in most cases they put them in the red boxes, too, at Toyota's order. All Toyota does is mark up the price and ship them to dealers.

Ok, sorry for the confusion. So basically for any given part - theres oem and oem spec?

Yes. But you're still missing it. The parts mentioned in this thread: Aisin, Mitsuboshi, etc are OEM. It's like pulling the original spark plugs, they say NGK & Denso right on them. It's the same with these parts.
