I'm getting ready to order a timing belt kit from either Amazon or Ebay, two questions, Ebay's a little cheaper, seems to include the same stuff,
Anyone one have a history with these kits from Ebay?
And second, on Amazon they are suggestion a special $30 tool, worth it?

thanks

I got the ebay kit and it was pretty nice, OEM or Aisin parts for the most part. I was about $300.

Now for the Amazon kit, is the special tool is to help get the crankshaft pully off, then yes its worth $30 IMO. I had a hell of a time getting mine off, and I had to make the special tool like most people. I would have paid $30 easily for the special tool.

It's probably for the Bluepoint tool to relieve pressure on the belt without removing the tensioner. Definitely worth it if you are reusing your hydraulic tensioner; saves taking the A/C compressor off which is a medium PIA. Worthless if you are changing the tensioner.

I don't think there is a $30 pulley holder--if there is, I agree, get it.

If you post the links to the kits, we can comment on the parts and price. Many of us have done E-Bay and been very satisfied. I know 'cabinair' or something like that has a good one: all OEM/OES.

That one looks pretty good, very similiar to the one I got, same parts and same brands (if not exactly) And that one has the new timing belt tensioner, like mine did, which is nice. (just dont pull that pin until you have it installed; you'll see it will make sense once you get in there) And yeah removing the power steering pump and the bracket is a PITA, but oh well it has to be done.

TimingKit

This is the one I was talking about. No GMB idlers, sticks to Koyo/NSK which were OES. Also has the OES Kuzeh thermostat. Is it worth an extra $38?--I don't know. It's something you only do every six to ten years, so I'd say yes.

Hey Addicted

Two questions
about how long did the install take?

And, I'm planning on adding the SC at the same time, good idea or?

thanks

Mine took 3 summer afternoons, including building a pulley holder and lots of swim breaks. It was first time for a TB for me, and I was very slow and careful. This should be the outside limit for just about anybody. Being able to go slow was key, I'd hate to rush through this the first time. If I had to do it tomorrow, I could do it in less than a single day.

I got that 30 dollar sst belt tensioner compressor and it didn't work. The threads just spun in the bottom housing and didn't do nada. Ended up just pulling the ac compressor and bracket.

To all those that have done the TB & WP themselves, which one of these kits looks better? Or are they more or less comparable to one another.

I guess the one that is cheaper is b/c it comes with non-toyota belts?

Also, do I really need all the 14 parts included in the kits? If the seals are good on the crank and camshafts is it really necessary to replace ,or is best to do for preventative measures?

Here are two more off amazon.
They are considerably cheaper than the ones for sale on ebay.
Trying to figure out the difference in pricing for these two??? They look exactly the same to me.

Anyone adverse to this kit?

I just bought the kit from the 2nd link although mine came from "timing belt kits" was the name of the seller. I think it was about the same price though. I liked the fact that they were in VA. I ordered it Tuesday morning, it shipped Tuesday afternoon, and was on my step yesterday, and that was using the free shipping (no express shipping of any kind). I haven't had a chance to look at it, but it seemed like it had a decent parts list from what I remember. I'd like to hear anyone else's opinion as well.
