Timing Belt Off?

I'm currently in the middle of a timing belt taking a break. I got to the point where I'm lining up the timing marks to be at "0" on the crank and on the "I" on the camshafts when I noticed the crank looks to be off a tooth. Now I have not gone any further than what you see in these pictures. Just wanted to post this and see if this is normal or not because I don't think it is.

ok, is that after rotating the engine 2x?

the tensioner should pull the extra slack out, and the mark will land right on the money.

I ask, because that doesn't look far enough to be 1 tooth off.

Oh, that's the belt stretching over the years. It's more like half a tooth off. Don't worry about it with the old belt (I even mentioned it in my T-Belt thread.) I'd only be concerned if the new belt did that and even then it'd still probably be fine.

awesome thank you! I just bought this vehicle only to find out its got the original belt... 170k miles..

I need to do this too. I want to do it myself but I fear it is out of my realm of confidence. my shadetree will do it for $435 plus parts. Don't think I can best that with my time and effort.

Like blackworks said, that looks normal for the old belt coming off. Just make sure to face the new belt the right way and count the teeth. I always mark the old belt on the way off and count to match up with the new belt. New belt should have marks for left/right cam and crank already but never hurts to double triple check! Bar 2 times around by hand when back together, marks on the belt won't line up but marks on crank and cams should be closer than your pics posted here.

for 435$ I'd have someone else do it especially if you don't think you can. It's not a bad job, just looks scary. For that price though, make sure this guy is putting in solid parts into your truck. Personally, I wouldn't want the bottom of the line kit in mine.

Agreed. Actually, I will be supplying the parts, so if shit parts go in, that's on me.

He is actually my safety valve. Anytime I do a DIY and I can't get it done in time or mess it up or just can't plain do it, he is my cleanup hitter.

Thats good to have someone there for that. Just stay organized and you wont need him. I'll tell you this right now, when you take off all the bolts for the fan bracket, It will still be held in by a small bracket which is mounted by one small screw. Use vice grips on thats screw instead of using a screw driver because you'll strip it real quick. Come in with those grips from the side and lock down and turn and it'll be out in a second.
