Timing belt or chain???

Open the hood, take off the oil cap and look down inside the tube with a flash light, you'll see the chain...
NO...it will need to be replaced....eventually. Steel stretches over time which can cause the chain to slip a tooth. The earliest it'll need replacing will be around 250k miles (as long as the engine is properly maintained - i.e. regular oil changes). One nice thing about timing chains is they start to make noise when it's time for them to be replaced. The bad thing..replacing a timing chain is 4-5 times the cost of replacing a timing belt.
Why are call the dealers
Forums are a great source of information but not the only source and not always the best source. Questions like this can be easily answered by the dealers. Call them next time Call a few if in doubt. Why are you relying on info fr firestone when you can just call the dealers. I don't get it

It depends on the person I guess. My brother-in-law is one of those people that would be better using this forum....
Brother-in-law Calls dealer - "Hello, Does my 05 4runner have a timing chain or timing belt??"
Dealer - "Do you have a V6 or V8?"
Brother-in-law "I have no idea."

is give and receive info...why would i call the dealer and be transferred 14 times and be put on hold when i can just ask here, check back a couple days later and get the info from people who have experience...i went to firestone to get an oil change and simply asked them, and ony did so because my girl has the same 4runner, just way more miles, to help her....im new to 4runner, have had tacomas forever, just trying to learn a new animal...

I had a timing chain break at about 30K miles, Corvette 454 that I bought new and yes I changed the oil. Broke while restarting after a fill up at the gas station.
At least that wasn't an interference engine like our engines are.
If a timing chain slips a tooth or breaks....there's a good chance it could do some serious engine damage.
Last timing chain that broke on me...when it broke...it put a nice hole in the timing chain cover. But at least it wasn't an interference engine.
Ok but under normal circumstances it would make sense to call the dealer and I'm surprised you get transferred 14 times and I assume you only have one dealer in your area

I wouldn't call a dealer either...First off..very unlikely you'll ever talk to a tech. And I've yet to meet the service writer who knows the first thing about cars. Most wouldn't even know how to change their own oil. I'm not a fan of Firestone...but at least there you'd be talking with someone who actually knows something about engines.
