Chains do break...but not very often. And usually after a few hundred thousand of miles or years of abuse.
HOWEVER...chains do stretch and when they stretch they can slip a tooth. If the engine is interference (which I think it is) then a chain slipping 1 or more teeth can cause a valve hitting a piston.
Everything I've read says the engine is an interference engine. Not sure where I remember reading it. I think it's in my service manual.
