Timing Belt V8 Question

You can register on the Toyota owners site and see if it was ever done by a dealer.

i did and it was only recommended. I looked it over before i bought it but i had limited knowledge on the timing belt on these. It was quite the impulse buy.

Ill see if my buddy is up to it and tackle this together. Seems pretty straight forward.

Got a few quotes yesterday and with the T-Belt, water pump, drive belts, coolant and labor, below are the prices that I received. Let me know what you think:

1. Indy shop: $800 with tax
2. Dealer 1: $810 + tax
3. Dealer 2: $820 + tax
4. Dealer 3: $900 + tax
5. Dealer 4: $900 + tax


When one of the dealer learned that I only have 60k miles on the 2005 4runner, he was saying I still have another year before I need it :nono:

Do you guys think I should choose the Indy shop over dealers since they may be less likely to upsell.

All shops would install OEM parts.

I will always either do it myself, or use a trusted independent. The key word there is TRUSTED. No way would I trust this to a random independent. I'd either have an established business relationship with them, or know friends who've recommend them.

If you trust the independent the take it to them. There are a couple dealers around here that always do the up-sell. When they do..I "just say no". A good independent can do the job as well or better then the dealer.

if you know your vehicle then they cant upsell you on something you dont want to do.

Got my waterpump, timing belt, seals and some other stuff all done for $700 by independent licensed and trusted mechanic.

I bought mine with 101k miles on it, wasn't willing to wait any longer

Even if you don't "know" it well, there's no compulsion to listen to their recommendations. I mean, unless it's something like your front hubs being completely destroyed with your wheels held on only by the brake calipers and brackets (I've seen this on one of our company fleet trucks...). Even then they'll just insist that the truck leaves their possession on a flatbed.

since you're in service and my little knowledge of dealing with service writers and looking at RO's all day. In my history it shows my vehicle was recommended at 78k for a timing belt and w/p and all that jive turkey. Well, it skips three months in service time and it was never mentioned again. Whats the likelihood that the previous owner had it changed elsewhere? Also what a quick way for me to look at the belt to get an idea.

I dont have the money to do the belt and all that but i WILL if i should.

If it doesn't have the sticker showing that the timing belt was replaced, I would get it replaced ASAP.

By the time you add everything that's nice to do at the same time, it's probably over $800 even though it's only a few minutes more work for them. Plus the very fine print says they charge more for a V6 or V8.

I got timing belt done thru a toyota dealersip, out the door, all parts, service and labor included, for a bit over $500....

if they d charge me the same price id be the happiest person ever))))and you are lucky to have it done so cheap.not even the private shope does it for under 500$ with parts and labor !!!
