Timing belt?

For starters my vehicle is a 2000 SR5 4runner, V6, 4x4, AT.

I was wondering if anyone could confirm if this is a quality timing belt kit. I don't want to cheap out quality wise on such a crucial engine component. Mine hasn't hit the mileage for a new timing belt yet, but figured it wouldn't hurt to search and maybe even get what I need now while I can.


I did a quick google search, and this one popped up on Amazon.com.

I also came up with this one on Amazon which looks like the exact same thing but for more money.

Has anyone used this kit? Is there a better one out there I should consider?

Check out rockauto.com They have a kit with an Aisin water pump and belt kit for $208 They also have a 5% discount code floating around the web. Just google it.

That looks like cheap quality garbage to me and I wouldn't touch this kit with a 10 foot pole...First off, it doesn't list the manufacturers of the different parts or the individual part numbers so there is no way to tell what you're really buying. Second, $220 is pretty cheap for an entire timing belt kit. When it comes to car parts, especially vital parts like the timing belt, you get what you pay for.

I am due (actually probably overdue) for a timing belt change myself and I will only buy at kit that includes all OEM parts and actually lists the manufactureres and part numbers so I know what I am getting. So far, this is the best and cheapest kit (with OEM parts) that I have found: Toyota TIMING BELT & WATER PUMP KIT Genuine & OEM Parts! 4-Runner/Truck 3.4L V6 | eBay. This is the one that I will go with once I have the funds.
 
The kits sold by the e-Bay seller listed above, "aircabinman", have been used by many on here and always with good reviews. These are critical parts, try to stick to the OEM manufacturers. Bando accessory belts are fine, but I'd want Toyota/Mitsuboshi for the TB, Koyo/NSK for the idlers, Aisin for the WP and Kuzeh for the thermostat. Toyota is the only source I have seen for the hydraulic tensioner.

I agree the Amazon descriptions are too vague to inspire confidence. These are mission-critical parts, don't mess around.

I know I'm reviving an old thread. The TKT-025 from Aisin has quality parts and is only $207 delivered.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but you want the NSK, not the Koyo idler bearing due to the fact that the timing belt will not fit over the latter due to it being wider than the Koyo idler itself.

With the NSK, this does not occur.

I'm also planning on tackling this project sometime soon. Can anyone else confirm the Koyo idler being too narrow?? The Koyo idler seems to be a pretty popular component in these kits...
 
I personally try to stay away from rockauto now. I have spent a large amount of money in parts from them over a short period of time and needed customer assistance during a manufacturer defect. A different person handled the emails every time I responded even if it was a response to their own emails, I talked to 5 different people in 5 different emails and I never did get helped or fully satisfied. I digress, but I would stick with the eBay kit with all the parts/brands Durk mentioned. eBay is all about customer satisfaction and rockauto you're pretty much at their whim and at a loss if they decide against you.
 
While on the subject...

The guy I bought my T4R from said the 2000 or perhaps all 3rd Gens have some sort of a safety (I forget the term he used) that IF the belt breaks the valves will not contact the cylinders or cause other issues.... is this so?

Also he replaced with OEM components and evidently got a bad set of bearings/rollers from Toyota as he said they squealed horribly. He replaced with a set made by Gates.... Any good or should I lower the interval before I change out?

Not really a safety...just a non interference engine. Wouldnt worry about the rollers unless u r hearing or feeling something. Gates is decent stuff as far as I know. Have used those parts in the past without any issues.

Just to be clear, Koyo is OEM on the tension idler and the aftermarket Koyo tension idlers work fine and are identical to stock original. The center idler OEM is NSK. I have no experience with a Koyo center idler.
 
Hey Guys. I need timing belt advice too. I've ripped into my 1994 4R, 3.0L V6, SR5 4X4, 5 speed standard, 196K miles to do routine timing belt & related. Replacing water pump, thermo, timing belt, tensioner, rad hoses, bypass hose, belts & the works. Using all Toyota OEM parts from ToyotaOverstockParts.com. Pricey but, cheaper than local. QUESTION: Should I replace the #1 (small) and #2 (large) idler pulleys (bearings) while I'm in here & staring at them ? They seem fine but....you know.....
