Timing chain kit

Currently putting in new motor I pulled from a 83 celica. Took oil pan off to replace gasket and found timing chain guides, just my luck. Anyway I dont know if the engine is original with the car. Are all these timing chain kits the same or is it different for the 83 compared to a later model. What numbers should I look for on the engine to get a year model? FYI, going back with metal guides.

What model is the engine? Like a 20r? Check out ENGNBLDR.com, and shoot him an email. He sells all sorts of different timing kits for toyota engines. He should at least be able to send you in the right direction.

Early 22Rs (81-82) had a 2-row TC.
Starting in 83 it went to single row.
In late 84 the block and head dimensions changed, so the TC is different from the earlier one.

120K is really pushing it. If you replace it, it's a real good idea to replace the water and oil pumps while everything is apart.

Thanks-any recommendations for all-inclusive "kits"? Also, just found coolant hose leak on short rubber hose above the alternator. Where can I find pre-formed replacements?

remove the fanbelt completely, start the engine, if the rattle is still there chances are its the timing chain tensioner as snapped.

I'm not actually sure what you mean with the fanbelt though, it moves 3 inch but is tight, sort of a contridiction !!!

For the newer single-row engines, this is the kit to go with:

TOYOTA 22R RE FEK YIKES What's this? EPN! - eBay (item 380293187619 end time Dec-06-10 10:11:58 PST)

I put one on my 4Runner last summer with the help of a friend that is a mechanic. He was impressed with the quality. Included the chain, tentioner, steel guide (prevents damage from stretched chains), water pump, oil pump and cover, as well as all gaskets. Only other things I needed were new belts, cleaners and fluids.

For the hose, you should be able to get it from an auto parts store or the dealer. I know the 3 radiator hoses are at AutoZone, the smaller hoses may need to come from Toyota.
