Timing chain

I've had my rig for about 6 months now and it is up to 184k miles. I bought it at 177k. I have no idea if the timing chain has ever been replaced. The guy I bought it from said he never had it replaced and he had it from 110k to 177k. So my real question is, if it is running like a champ, should I still get it replaced and how can I tell if something is wrong with the timing chain?

If it were me, I would do it anyway just for my peace of mind. Even if the person who had it before the person you bought it from had it changed, it's about due again anyway. And FYI (you may have meant to say it, but just in case) it's a belt, not a chain. Plan to put a new water pump in while you're at it.

My bad. I have a 89 toyota pickup with the 22re as well... It's all I know.

dont waste your time, its a non interference motor, if the belt brakes no harm will be done. besides your water pump will piss the bed before the belt will go bad. -my father inlaw has never seen a belt brake, in either a tacoma or a 4runner, and has seen several original belts over 250k. not to say it cant happen. he has always seen the water pumps fail first, and that has also been my experience as well. but yeah i would not be jumping to change the belt. there is a good chance the belt was changed just before the previous owner bought it so yeah it could be only like 100k or less

ps i have the special tool to hold the belt tensioner down to make this job a ton easier, for when you do end up doing this, ill let you use it.
