No, i didn't search through all the old posts to see if anyone else found what I did, but, since I am not asking a question, i figure that's ok...
I have a 2003 4Runner with a moonrof. Ever since new, I have had rattles coming from the headliner when driving over bumpy roads. Yes, i know there is a TSB out that addresses such rattles, but i really didn't want the dealer teraing my whole roof apart. Anyways, my particular rattle seems to be worse when the sunshade is open, so for three years, i have kept it mostly closed (except when i get the courage to actually open the noisy moonroof).
So i'm driving along the other day with the sunhade open listening to the rattle. i put my hand between the top of the headliner and the bottom of the closed monroof (at the end closest to the windshield) and pushed and pulled stuff until the rattle stopped. i found that the rattle stopped when i pressed down on the retracted wind deflector.
Later that day i opened the moonroof and pushed down on the wind deflector tapping it against the trough where it gets parked when the monroof is closed. The noise that the wind deflector made when it hit the bottom of the trough sounded pretty similar to my rattle.
You still with me? Upon further inspection, i noticed that there were three pieces of felt stuck to the bottom of the trough. Not enough i thought. So i cut three narrow and thin pieces of felt and stuck directly to the underside of the wind deflector. i then put two slightly thicker felt bumpers in the trough, towards the rear. Pressing down on the wind deflector was noticeably less noisy.
i took a nice ride yesterday (with the sunshade open and moonroof closed) down the bumpy state park access road where i go to ride my bike. and you know what? it was almost completely silent. Yup, first time in three years. i hope it lasts. i hope i don't get the dreaded exploding wind deflector noise followed by the even more harrowing and very labored requiring-manual-assist moon roof closing problem as a consequance of this mod...
