Tips on taking seat apart to replace leather

Not sure about the plastic. But. Swapping seat bottoms does require removing the leather, as I guess you've figured out. The cushions themselves don't interchange (on an 02 Limited, at least).
Otherwise, it's pretty standard- you've got a million hog rings to remove and replace. Get the tool and a bunch of rings. Not hard, just tedious. I don't remember any gotchas (it's been two years).

Controls for the seat pop off and then a couple of screws that hold the side plastic shrouds.
There are 4 bolts that hold the seat cushions to the seat base. I do not recall if the cushion bases differ from driver to passenger but if it does, you have to open the hog rings to swap the cushion/leather. I just peeled off the occupant sensor that was in the passenger seat and glued it to the drivers seat since i was going to swap cushions/leather.
This was with my 99 LTD so I think your 02 LTD should not be too different.

I just swapped seat bottoms on my 01 SR5 with cloth manual seats. Easy swap, just pull the seat (4 bolts) and remove the 4 bolts holding the cushion onto the frame. I couldn't figure out how to get the plastic piece with the adjustment knob on it off so I just used a ratcheting wrench to get the seat bottom out to make sure I didn't break anything.

what tool are you referring to? is there a special tool that will help unclip all the "hog" rings???

I'm looking to do exactly this.... swap the passenger side and drivers side as the infamous rip in the side of my drivers seat is starting to get bigger

I didn't use new hog rings - i think it would have been a lot more difficult getting the pliers and hog ring into place - some of the areas were hard to get to.
I just used zip ties and those worked fine. The top and bottom cushion along with the seat heaters and leather pieces all transferred from the passenger seat, from a 99 that my friend is getting rid of, to my 02.
Not hard to do - just time consuming.
Ill post some before/after pictures tomorrow incase anyone is interested in seeing.

Slide the cover up like your going to take it off. The clips need to be squeezed together to be pulled out. When putting them back in make sure they are turned right to latch in the headrest. I got one of mine backwards and have yet to fix it. Also hog rings are easy to use.
i took a few pictures:
-1- my drivers seat with a "Y" shaped rip on the side that i tried to glue back together (only lasted a few days) My driver seat leather was dirty and wouldn't come clean, not to mention all of the cracks that had formed.
-2- my friends passenger seat (to be swapped) has 100K less miles of wear
-3 & 4 - passenger seat leather and cushions installed on my driver seat frame.
I think it turned out ok - it got rid of the tear on the side. Hopefully now it will take years for a new tear to show up.

Did you figure out how to remove these? I want to remove my upper seat cushion and cover to replace the foam.

If you reach under the seat cover from the back side of the chair you will reach where those plug into. Feeling around, you will feel the front and back of the plug can be pressed, you will have to push those in and they can be popped out at that point.

Also, how do I "un-clip" the black plastic pieces at the bottom that hold the front and back of the cover together?

When I took my covers off I actually unbolted the bottom piece from the bracket. This makes it easy to unhook the bottom from the top, but if not you just have to pull hard on them. If you have the knob to lift the seat up and down I'd try to raise the seat as much as possible before trying to unhook them. Hope this helps.

I did remove my seat and seat bottom when I did the lower cushion. I just was afraid to pry too much on the black thing at the bottom. Thanks again I’m going to give it another try!
