Tire Balancing/weight ???

Hey guys I got some new tires put in yesterday to go along with my lift ! Pics to come! I got it done at my buddy's shop yesterday but he used the wheel weights that go on the outer lip of the wheel and when I noticed after he was done I asked and he said it was a true balance and that will be the best option. I have the limited 18" wheels and put on a larger E rated tire(heavier) so the extra tire weight could play a part but I think it looks a little crazy because two of them( drivers side front&passenger side rear have a lot more balancing weight on them. Is there any benefit of having the weight on the outer lip of the wheel instead of the waits that go on the inside other than looks? Probably driving me nuts too because my when are plasti dipped and the wheel waits aren't (yet) haha so their very noticeable ! Thanks

OMG, clamp on rim weights?

You buddy needs to buy a new machine that can do stick on weights.

I just took off my spare tire to try and put on 33" spare, key word try, that didnt work. too big LoL, when i took off the tire, the clamp on wheel weight probably has been on for the last 10 years and 173,000 miles. around the clamp its all corroded and it actually ate away at the metal.

no clamp on weights, thats meant for old steel wheels. plus they look ugly as all hell!

To get the best balance, the weights on the outside are the best option. You would need them to get a true dynamic balance. If they put the weights on the inside you are getting a static balance. A dynamic balance benefit is seen more with a wider wheel than narrow.

There are machines that will allow you to use stick on weights in the inside of the wheel so the weight isn't visible. You really need a high positive offset wheel (something you typically find on a front wheel drive vehicle) in order for that to work. This is impossible with a deep dish, i.e., negative offset wheel because the area you would need to place the weight is exposed.

What I would do is to have a static rebalance and see how it rides. If it rides smooth, leave it like it is.

I prefer clip on weights to the tape weights. Tape weights are good the fist time, but they leave a nasty adhesive and you can also get some corrosion under them if you live in the rust belt. The proper clip on weights are designed for the flange of your wheel's rim and they are coated wit Teflon so they will not cause excessive damage especially if you have your wheels balanced every 5k or so.

Haha I know! I'm getting a alignment done right now I'm just going to have them re balance with the sticky weighs on the inside! Cause I know it's going to drive me crazy !!

Your friend is not entirely BSing you...I think for the truest balance, you want the weights as far out to the edge as possible, and obviously the clamp on weights can go further out towards the edge than stick on ones.

With that said, I'd never in a million years use clamp on weights for any alloy wheel based on looks alone, lol.

Also like Gshadow was saying, the steel clamp on weights could dig into the alloy wheel's surface and eventually cause galvanic corrosion due to dissimilar metals in contact (aluminum and steel).

Anyone ever ran dynabeads or airsoft pellets? I am gonna try the airsoft pellets when I put my 35's on and see how it works. I have a friend running them with success. It's interesting research with mixed opinions.

Yeah I mean my buddy is a great Machanic and know his stuff very well butt there's no way I can leave them on like that even if I do re plasti dip them it just doesn't look good! Getting the stick weights put on right now.

Thanks for the feedback!

There is something called equal. I use it to balance 22.5, 24.5, and 19.5" truck wheels/tires. Toss a bag in the wheel and you are off.

I never understood those bag or airsoft pellet balances, our Hunter machine shoes an option to mount weights to the inside of the tire tread?

Sticky weights are a great alternative for modern allow rims, they come in many flavors (i.e. 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 oz segments) I have always been amazed by Mercedes' use of a 3M Foam like product, its like a lead (or some dense metal) impregnated foam and they cut to length for very accurate tire weights, stuff is crazy flexible.
