Cooper Discoverer AT3 in 265/70 R17, LT or load range E. Anything C rated won’t last if you’re going off-road.

Very debatable, especially since there's a thread about offroading on non-LT's (P-metrics) on this forum, with the vast majority of those that do it stating they've never popped one.
I'm putting Wildpeak AT3W's on in a month. Stock size, P-metric (Non-LT). Rated for a higher load capacity than LT BFG KO2's in Load Range C.
Agreed. I've been into 4 wheeling for 15 years now and myself and friends have run numerous C-load or P metric tires over the years. Flats have never been an issue. This is from some pretty hardcore rock crawling in the northeast, to fire roads, to sand. If you want the added security then fine, but I don't feel it's as big of an issue as some make it out to be here. I've said it a few times, but drivability of the lighter tire outweighs the potential strength for me.

The Falken Wildpeak AT3W look great amd perform well on and off road.
Lots of people like the Nitto Ridge Grapplers also.

I would stay away from the Nitto’s. After they ware down about half way they start to slide in the rain. This is what happened to me.

I'd have to look around for a thread, but I also remember hearing they are very prone to chunking and losing tread if actually used offroad in rocks. It seemed the verdict was they were a good mall crawler tire, but not necessarily a good offroad tire.
Surprising also given the fact that I've had pretty good experience with Nitto tires before (had Trail Grapplers and then Exo Grapplers on my Jeep plus have Nomad's on my Rover currently).

I'm having trouble finding the Wildpeak AT3W in stock size (265/70r17) in SL Load (P-rated) on the Falken website. I only see the E Load in stock size.
Did Falken drop the SL, or am I missing them?

While they are still on the Falken size list on their website, I am curious if they are actually discontinuing the SL's (P-metrics). Discount Tire no longer lists them in stock size, only the LT E's. My local Walmarts still list the P's as in stock. I have P265/70R17 Wildpeaks myself, I love them. They accidentally installed mostly (4 of 5...) LT E Wildpeaks when I got them, so for a few minutes I got to look at how they looked in comparison to the P's before they brought it back in the shop and put the P's on. Definitely a bit more tread, definitely meatier. If the SL's are gone, I'd probably be willing to buy the LT E's, although they do weigh 6 lbs more each.

Yokohama Geolanders
After dumping my hated Bridgestone Dueler HT's (shame on Toyota for putting such a horrible tire on a new 4 runner).........I bought Yokohama Geolander AT's and have been sooooo happy with them. They are M+S AT and 3 peak snow rated tires. Happy happy!

Did you ever decide on a tire? I just got a '21 ORP and have the exact same dilemma as you. The dealer put the cheapest tires ever made on it and although I can get 22 MPG, I want a bigger and safer tire. Strongly debating between the Toyo Open Country and Falken Wildpeak and want to stick with 265s since I daily drive it all over the place for my business. Everyone raves about the Falkens but man are they quite a bit heavier than the Toyos and that makes me wonder how much it affects MPG.

My P265/70R17 Wildpeaks lost about 1mpg compared to stock. I have averaged 20mpg overall since getting them, and I have gotten a few 25mpg highway tanks since getting them. They are heavy for a P-metric, but they are light compared to LT E's.
That said, they may or may not still offer the Wildpeak in P265/70R17. They miiight be discontinuing it and going to LT E in that size only, which is another 7 lbs heavier each.

Trouble finding SL's too
Well that sucks. After reading a 1000 tire threads and filling my youtube feed up with tire reviews :Cry:I finally made my mind up for the Wildpeak's in the SL load rating. I also saw that they are now not listed in several locations, although they are still on Falkens website.
I have my wife is checking today when she goes to have a leak fixed on her car at the local tire shop. We'll see if they can get them locally. I came from a Ram Rebel with a hemi so I really don't want to make the 4Runner any more lethargic than it already is so E's are not something I'm looking for. I love it, it's just a bit sluggish.
My second choice was the Mickey Thompson Baja Blast but given some of the reviews that they are noisy above 50, I ended up leaning towards the Falkens.
I'll see what the wife says after she get's back from the tire shop this afternoon.

Awesome, thanks for the info. 1 MPG is worth it over the benefits. I'm gonna look around and see if I can find them locally.
I've ran the 3 most popular BFG Ko2's, Toyo Open Country, and Falken Wildpeaks. The Falken Wildpeaks were my favorite because they performed well in the snow, mud and rain. The KO2s were great in mud and snow but failed in the rain and I get a lot of rain where I live.
285s are nice but you will need to mod a bit to fit them by trimming/moving plastic and adjusting your caster. 285s will also negatively effect your fuel economy and acceleration.
If you want a better stance you could always use spacers (spidertrax) or wheels with a bit more offset

I run 285/70-17 Wildpeaks in a Standard Load and I really like them. They weighed about 8 pounds per tire less than my previous KO2’s in 275/70-17 E load tires. In my case my mileage seemed to increase by .5 mpg over the KO2’s and the acceleration seems a tad bit better. Weight in tires are power and mileage killers on these trucks. I have put hundreds of miles on AT3W’s across the desert and many of the local mountains. Smooth ride and reasonably quiet. They don’t seem to wear as well as an E load though. I have full armor minus a aftermarket rear bumper. Wheel spacers and or large negative offsets will increase the mods to fit the front tires, and possibly require a BMC. I run a 17 x 8.5 x 0 wheel with 285’s and still have my mud flaps and no rubbing. Just pushed the front liners forward a tad. My fenders were already trimmed from the port. I will probably buy another set of SL Wildpeaks again.

I just called one of my local shops (I believe it was Discount Tire) and asked if they had Wildpeaks in SL P265/70R17 and he said yes, no problem. I also asked if they were made in China and he said no way, he's actually never heard of that. I'm pretty happy to hear that and will be most likely grabbing some fairly soon. I'd call some of your local tires shops to confirm.

Check them visually before you walk out the door. In May I had an order for 5 SL P265/70R17 Wildpeaks at my Discount Tire. They put on 4 LT E's... and 1 SL P. Had them fix it the same day. Point being: watch out, it's possible for them to put the LT's on.
