Tire Help- Which one?

Cooper STT or Maxxis Bighorn?

I'm wanting to run a 285/75/16 tire on my 99 4Runner. I have narrowed it down to 3 possibilities.
-Cooper Discoverer STT
-Toyo Open Country M/T
-Mickey Thompson MTZ
I think the tread design is pretty comparable between the three, I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on tire quality, ride quality and road noise.
I've heard the Coopers and Mickey Thompsons are pretty quiet for Mud Terrains on the pavement. Just wanting to hear from some of you that have experience with these tires or know more than I do about them (which is nothing). Feel free to chime in.

Id go with the Toyo's due to how well I've heard they wear on the street. I do about 95% of my driving on asphault though and only trail ride when I get the chance. I'd have some now if they weren't so expensive.

If I buy a new tire again they will probably be hankook Mt's due to price and things I've read from people that own them.

Do you need a mud terrain tire? I have a set of Falken Wildpeaks and I like them. Queit on the road and seem to work well off road for what little bit I have done with them.

With the tires you listed...I would go with the toyos..a little noisy but wear really well.
 
I have 50k on my MTZ's FWIW. I'd say either the MTZ's or the Cooper STT. From those I've talked to who have run toyos, some swear by them and some hate them with a passion.
 
Don't run the toyos... They are way too heavy. They are designed for big diesel trucks ... They weigh 10-15 lbs heavier per tire than other tires od the same size and ripe by other manufacturers. They will rob power from your truck, and you will notice it. I'd say either the Cooper or the MTZs would be a good bet
 
I prefer the BFG T/A KO ($190) or the General Grabber AT2 ($150) - both are great tires that have nearly 0 road noise. I run 265/75/16, been doing it for years.

I don't see the benefits of big expensive noisy tires. These BFG look awesome and perform great in rain/mud/snow.

Thanks, I read the thread last night before I posted this. That is part of the reason I'm leaning towards the Coopers.

I don't do too much driving around town with my 4runner but still want it to be decent on the road.

i have the BFG AT KOs now and they do good off road. But wheeling around here in TN is all mud. Even the moderate trails are a bit risky with the ATs and climbing wet hills was a challenge with them. Just want a little more....
 
I ran a set of 315/75r16 toyo mts on a 4 door wrangler and was very pleased with them. They had 31k miles on them when i sold the jeep. I bought a set of the cooper stt a couple of weeks ago and I love them. There's a little road noise but they look great. I think either the toyo or the cooper, can't go wrong either way.
 
Update- Currently I'm leaning more towards the Coopers. I filed my taxes today and will get enough back for a set (thanks for the help Uncle Sam). I also have been looking at the Nitto Trail Grapplers, they are an aggressive tread but look pretty good and I've heard a few good things about those tires.
The Toyos might be coming off the list, it seems they may be too much of a tire for a T4R. Any more thoughts?
 
I'm not sure if this issue is specific to the ATP, but my 285's are significantly undersized. Closer to a true 265/75-16.
 
I was doing a tire hunt and was on the verge of buying the MT's... Ended up with the BFG's, and love the road manners. The KM2's and the MT's are very similar in tread pattern, other than that the MT's have a few more groves/sipes.
 
i cant speak of the trail grapplers cause i have never had them, but i do love my nitto terra grapplers, they do well in just about everything other than mud...

the one mud terrain tire i have run on my 4runner, is the maxxis bighorn, and i loved that tire, its gonna be a toss up between that and the trail grapplers for my next tires -but thats a long ways away so who knows what will come up before then

But seriously, I'm considering the Cooper STT's for my next tire. The BFG AT's have served me well, but I think I want a little more aggressive look next go around.

How do the Cooper's do in the rain? Anyone have any 1st-hand experience to share?
 
I'm considering a Cooper tire for my next tire as well, except I'm looking at the St Maxx. Through my research I've found nothing negative on any Cooper's tires except for some mixed opinions about the weight of the tires? II'm the sure if the sane applies to the STT. What do you guys think? I've heard about 59-62 lbs per tire in a 285/75/16 in the Maxx's. Sound about right?

if you actually off road go for the Coopers... they have the chip/cut resistant sidewall that is guaranteed by Cooper... so if the sidewall does get damaged your covered!

The tires that mines and loggers use are the Coopers... they are the only ones that withstand the abuse

just my professional opinion... but you know what they say about opinions!

I have the same opinion. ugamurph has the Cooper STT in 265 he said they rode great on the road and his outperformed my BFG ATs in the mud. Shoot him a message, I'm sure he has had a chance to drive in the rain by now. I will see if I can get him to chime in on his opinion of them.

Yeah, my BFG AT's have definitely surprised me offroad, but I'm sure the STT's should clean out & dig better. Plus I like the more aggressive look.

I'll try to message ugamurph for some rain performance notes. Thanks for the feedback!
