X2, if you are in school, and will be doing lots of highway driving, Duratracs > any mud tire IMO. They are better on-road, still very good off road, and should last longer, with less road noise. I was so impressed I got a set for my new truck without even considering other options.

Yea, and I would agree....but the Duratrac has a pretty weak sidewall.

I won't be going off road as much, but when I do I need something with a lot of strength, but at the same time I will be doing a lot of highway driving.

It makes it a tough call

Yea the KM2's look really nice, really clean sidewall, not a lot of stupid designs like a lot of manufactures use.

But what would make the KM2 better than the MTR?

So the time has come for new tires.....

I hate having to make decisions when there are so many options, so I have come here seeking some wise opinions.

I have narrowed my choices down to the list below

1) GoodYear MTR-K $1300
2) General Grabber Red Letter $1100
3) BFG KM2 Mud Terrain $1300


The tires picked will be wrapped on the beautiful 5 star wheel

Let me just say I have the KM2's and I have a 2wd at the moment and they have gotten me everywhere and outta so much. They are an incredible tire and I think the fact they can get a 2wd 4runner anywhere is a testament to that. I have wheeled a bunch around AZ, NM, and done about 7 passes in CO including the 2nd highest 4wd trail in CO.

So personally I'm very biased but recommend the KM2's in a heart beat.

I must admit. I had to try these out to get my own opinion and so far they have been great. I don't have any experience with other m/t tires, but for general wheeling I have yet to make these thing break traction on steep inclines and some rather technical terrain. I must admit it wasn't that muddy (sooner stay away from that), but it was rocky, sand/clay base, and loose rock.

On the road they work great. No issues. They are a bit loud but I don't mind. Higher pitched then most M/T because of the closer lugs.

Only issues is I think they weigh more then most M/T's, and they are HUGE! With weight of truck my 33's measure 33. Everybody thinks they are 35's (and they probably weigh accordingly)

It's funny that you said they are huge, when I first looked at them I thought they gave me the wrong size like a 35" or something so I actually measured them and they were the right ones but they just look so big, I chose them because I've herd nothing but good things about them and the money, with the money I saved with getting them I am now able to get
A DIY outdoor logic front bumper and the tires with the money that I had budgeted for just my tires so its a win win

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I have never really been a fan of the MTRs...always seemed to aggressive for the amount of street driving I do. So I haven't researched them too much. I do mostly highway, with the occasional offroad. Plus we get a lot of snow up here usually.
That being said, I haven't found anything bad about the KM2s to steer me towards the MTRs.

Don't KM2's have weak sidewalls too? At least that was a complaint I heard often when I read reviews. (The jeep forum has great reviews from actual users. I suggest checking it out too)

Yea, when I got them I was WTF? 33's generally look wide. These aren't nearly as wide looking but that's because they are so tall! They look almost like a 255/85 which I like. At least somewhere between the 33/34. Not sure what they measured prior to installing, but on the vehicle at 34psi they are 33" which with tire flex they are probably 33.5 or more. Many 33's actually measure much less.

I'll admit I'm a bit of an offroad noob. I'm well versed in motorcycles. This was to be a adventure truck for travel with my dog, but turns out wheeling can be fun. Problem is our local areas are very hard on equipment. I know that from dirt biking and riding already. Hence why I take it easy on this truck.

I know many will say looks don't matter, but lets face it they do. Some tires are downright ugly out there.

I don't know too much, but people say good things about the MTZ around here.

I'd say our terrain is VERY similar to CO. Very rocky, clay/sandy type soil, muddy, roots, very slippery in other areas, etc. We have a bit of everything.

For what its worth all US Spec OPS, and all prominent special forces world wide, use MTR's.
I have not used or ridden in a vehicle with either the General or KM2 but I loved the MTRs I had and if I had the funds would run them on my 4runner.

Despite the overwhelming support for the KM2's, based on my drive style and habits; I am going to hold out for the General Grabbers (Red Letter Variety)

It might mean I wait until as late in the year as October, but I am fine with that. I am not going to force myself into a situation I do not desire, after all it is clear of 1000 dollars.

I do like those, I'm sure you will to. Make sure you have a spare though. Was reading Scoobydan's thread about his experience with them. Had a puncture in one, and even with warranty couldn't get it replaced because there were none available. Hopefully this time they produce more of them and don't stop production.

Walmart.com used to have those general grabber red letters and you can do free site to store shipping. Might be worth checking out but they might be out as well. Also, WM had/has KM2's and MTR's

You won't be disappointed with the KM2s. A buddy of mine runs them on his lifted Xterra and they're great on/offroad. I would suggest Mickey Thompson Baja MTZs (just under 1200 for 4 shipped from Summit) because thats what I run and I love them, but it seems you've narrowed down your options already.

Almost as good;new tires are warrantied better and I do like buying from Discount since if I have an issue I can get it fixed in store with no shipping or having TW determine if my warrantee claim falls under their guidelines. Plus the age of the casing might bother me a little as the tire ages. You get what you pay for but TW are solid tires and are great for keeping things under budget.

The best deal I've ever received was buying tires from discount tire direct and having them shipped to my local discount tire. They were "Special order" at discount tire and would have cost more. I saved about $100 over all. Great service at discount tire Humble, TX.
