I recently purchased an 18 OffRoad. I considered powdercoating the wheels, but given the price (and hassle of jackstanding the vehicle while they were at the powdercoater's) I decided to simply swap to the TRD wheels. In addition, I bought 265/17 K02s.
I had them mounted at Tire Kingdom. Watched the entire swap and the installer even let me help. Watched him "0.0 and 0.0" each wheel/tire, helped him hand tighten the lugs so to reduce the beating from the air gun.
I hadn't researched the pressure so when he asked, I defaulted to "factory specs." So he set them at 36.
Then comes the test drive. From the stock Bridgestone Dueler's, there was a natural (and expected) step back in ride quality, but it was more than I had anticipated. Not sure if it's the lighter wheels, stiffer sidewalls, but the ride in stoplight traffic was worse, but not totally unacceptable.
Then comes the highway drive. The ride was absolute garbage. I was sooooo incredibly upset. It almost felt like the wheels weren't balanced at all. Terrible vibrations and harmonics.
After researching (this thread) I decided to up the tire pressure and it solved 90% of the issue.
For whatever reason, with TRD wheels and the suspension settings, my K02's did NOT like 36psi at ALL.
The ride before was so bad I thought I'd go and get them rebalanced if maybe the other machine just was off or not calibrated correctly.
Long story endless, it seems like on a newer TRD Off Road with TRD wheels, anything less than 40psi creates some really conflicting and harsh harmonics that make the ride absolutely unacceptable. Which was really disappointing coming from an SR5 with stock wheels and BFG Rugged Terrains that rode beautifully.
Just another data point for others who might be running a similar setup.
