tire pressure monitor

i am considering swapping out the stock Bridgestone P265/65/R17 on my 2005 SR5 for a set of Revo in 265/70/R17. i am wondering if the work is done at other tire stores or even Costco tire center, would they be able to handle the tire pressure monitor sensors as if it's done at dealer?

what i mean is, i am not sure the pressure sensor is part of the wheel or ... a tire store manager i spoke w/ mentioned the sensors on my 05 Runna is the "non-direct" system (maybe he said "direct" and i got it reversed), in the sense that it doesn't point out exactly which tire has low pressure. he said the sensor is the same or similar as that used for ABS, basically sensing the tire rotation speed to determine the pressure.

does this make sense - what i want to be sure about the tire store knows about the pressure sensor system and can reset/set it properly w/o me making another trip to the Toyota dealer.

What we have is a direct system. The metal valve stems are part of the sensors. There are several threads that will answer your questions. Try this one http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5428&highlight=tire+sensor There is even a photo in it.
It is possible to have someone else do it. However, I would make sure they have worked with these sensors before. If they don't know how the system works, then I wouldn't trust them.

thanks for the pointer. so after reading the thread, it sounds if i am just replacing the *tires* (though to a slightly bigger Revo), which i am, the sensor issue should not be a big deal then. people in that thread were mostly discussing how to make the sensor work with a bigger (20") wheel.

As long as they don't damage the sensors, it won't be a problem.
