Tire Pressure Sensor Problem-Need Help???

You can't bypass the TPMS. U.S. law requires such a system to be installed by the manufacturer since about 2005. There were posts a while back where people have taken the light out of the instrument panel. That's about all you can do.

There's also another catch to having two sets of wheels. The ID of each sensor is stored in the computer's memory, and ID's can only be changed by a dealer. Unlike the Land Cruiser, the 4Runner's TPMS doesn't accomodate two sets of sensors. So, you'd also have to run to the dealer to have the computer re-programmed every time you swap wheels.

$200 for an extra set of sensors is a good deal - they usually run $100-$150 each. Are those used from somewhere?
 
I wouldn't bother with another set of sensors. The programming (by the stealer with the OBD tool) twice a year is cost prohibitive. Also, I believe reading somewhere in the Toyota literature that the current sensor will not fit a 20" or bigger wheel because of the rim profile at the drop center. If you decide you still want the sensors, I would check if you can actually use this sensor on the wheel you are planning to use before buying.

If you don't get sensors then you'll actually be running the opposite scenario that some of us run. We have steels on for winter and a blinking light (that I cover with a small piece of electrical tape on the gauge cluster) until spring.

I was mistaken when i looked at how much they were. I thought when i priced my wheels at tirerack they only added 200. They are actually 86 a piece from that retailer. As far as the end result, it looks like ill be tearing my dash apart to get to the light! Thanks for the help

no need to tear the dash apart.. the tpms module is attached to the inside of the panel just below the glove box... all you have to do is ground one wire and no more light.. i believe it is the pink/black one... i will have to look again to be sure
 
is there a way to reset this light? it came on today..and I went and got the tires checked....pressures checks out and there seems to be no flat detected...I just purchased my 05 4runner and it didn't come with the manual


please help

Do you have any better specifics or know a link to where I can find on how to ground out what wire and how to do it. I would love to do something like that instead of going at my dash

i dont mean to highjack your thread, but it is a relevent question:
If you decide to have no TPMS lights in your new rims, does the light on your dash eventually "burn out" due to it being on for 3/4 of the season for the remainder of the car life?

I haven't done this yet, but from what i am understanding it will just make it so the light never comes on. So.... I don't understand your question of how the light would burn out.... It would never be on. Or are you just saying that, why not just let it burn out.... If thats what you mean, i couldn't stand seeing the light on that much all the time until it did burn out... Plus thats a ghetto way to solve the problem!

Also thanks ROOK, i plan to try this soon. I'm having trouble trying to figure out what style i want to go with on my rims!

my question is in regards to if you DIDNT purposely bypass the light. does the TPMS light on the dash even burn out?

run a new length of wire and ground it to the body.

I would be interested if this works. From the schematics it looks like grounding this wire would cause the light to be on always and would also ground an output of the ECU which could cause a current drain that would overheat the ECU.

my understanding is that the wire when grounded turns the light off.. if you have the diagram, attach it. it will help others. here is where I started, and it works

Here is a copy of the schematic. I have highlighted the path from the positive battery terminal through the diode on the instrument panel. As you can see it appears grounding pin 6 of the ECU should make the light stay on. Since it turned the light off, the only explanation I can suggest is that it burned out the diode due to a reduction of the impedance through the ECU which increased the voltage across the diode. Your reference to the Tacoma seems reasonable but maybe their circuit is different. The schematic shown is for the 2007 4Runner and I verified it is the same for the 2006.

Rook, have you disconected the splice to see if the diode actually burned out?? I want to shut out that annoying exclamation point! I'd rather not burn a diode out permanently.

Im not seeing that harnes you tapped into. that freakin bleakin light is driving me crazy.
Ive had my tire pressure in all 5 set at 32, 40, 44, and 50 PSI.
can anyone help.

this mod is reversible. i have since wired in a switch which allows me to use the system half the year.

ric,
the module should be below the glove box. there are 2 screws holding the black plastic panel in place, drop the panel and it should be there
