My local tire shop does free rotations (included with road hazard), and they just "X" cross them... so LF and RR go back and forth, and RF and LR go back and forth. I'm approaching 60K with my Cooper A/TW's... which had a 50K treadwear warranty. I'm just now starting to get some minor irregular wear on the tires, and I still have 6/32's left on all of them. The tires have only required one minor re-balance along the way. No issues with steering wheel shimmy either.
Not bad, all things considered.
Anyway, you're likely to get lots of opinions... Mine, FWIW... I think it's more important that you do the rotations at all, and somewhat less important on which pattern you settle on. Good luck. YMMV.
