Tire size for 1999 4runner 1.2 SS lift

I would love to hear what others say because I researched and researched this topic and apparently over looked that there will be some level of trimming - at least for me. My experience has been quite a bit more surprising than originally thought it would be. I have a 97 limited. I installed the SS 1.2 and added a set of Goodyear Duratracs (285/70/17). I had pretty bad rubbing when I made 50% turns. Especially in reverse. So then after more research, it turns out I need to get some wheel spacers. Now I have 1.25" Spidertrax installed and now it's hitting the front limited fender as well as what looks to be the fender well bolts. I'm going to do some grinding inside the fender wells this weekend, but what I can tell you is that just throwing on a pair of 285/70/17s isn't an easy bolt on and go wheeling. Apparently it takes a little bit more work. 265s will be your safest bet even though I think 285s look the business.

Something to keep in mind is that a lift won't change the size tires you can run without rubbing because the suspension will still flex to the same limits as when it was stock. If you look around there are a lot of threads on tire clearance, wheel offset/spacers, and what required (if any) trimming/pounding was required for that size tire.

I'm running 285/75/16 on my. 97 limited with the sonoran 1.2 kit. I'm still building my truck but have noticed some rubbing when reversing with the wheels turned hard. Only happens when reversing though. Haven't looked yet to see what it is because I'm getting ready to change out a bunch of my front end converting to manual hubs and because my alignment is way off. Once I get those items done I'll dig into where its rubbing and correct it. I'm also running aftermarket rims with 4.5 backspacing for what it's worth.
To be safe you could probably stick with 32" tires but what fun would that be. :biggrin2:

I also believe that the caster plays a role in how much rubbing there is. Adding lots of positive caster will pull the tire forward and away from the areas that it generally rubs so look into that as well. Lots of the guys who run 35's say it helps a lot.

That's exactly why I was waiting to get my new parts in and alignment done to see if it changed anything. No since fixing a problem that might go away on its own.

I have 285/75-16 on stock wheels with a 1.25" spacer in front. No trimming, but these tires run a little small. They rub on the lower bumper valance at 50% turn in reverse as described above, but this is very minimal. They also rub on the rear bumper at full stuff. Both are very easy to fix.
I slapped a set of 35's on there with 17x9 wheels 4.5 backspacing, and they rubbed like the dickens any time the wheels weren't pointed dead straight.

It depends on a few things. Stock wheels vs aftermarket, which trim you have...Limited will rub more than SR5s, and what tires you get (how aggressive the tread is.
I have a lift with similar height. I run a 285/75/16 on aftermarket wheels. I have an SR5 with the black plastic flares that stop above my bumper. I never had to trim anything and I do not rub.
Another local member has the same lift as me, is running 285s, but has a Limited. His tires rub the flare on the bumper whenever he turns full lock.
You can fit 285s. They may rub when you first install, but you can definitely fix that with a little work. 285s are very very common with that lift, and most everyone has run them successfully with a little work.

My lift is set to about 3.5" in front and 5" in back. I'm running 265/75-16. I don't have a body lift. My suspension will compress to the bumpstops. I get rubbing at the top of the inner fender liners on full compression. Also on the rear of the front fenders when turning and compressing. I have heated the fender liners with a heat gun and pushed those areas in.
Going with 33s usually requires a body lift to minimize the top rubbing. Other areas will need some hammering and trimming. Bigger tires will need more.
As said. The same size tire will fit/rub in the same spots as when lifted. A suspension lift will reduce the frequency of that rubbing.
A little rubbing usually isn't a big issue as long as where it's rubbing isn't sharp.

Running the 1.2 lift with 265s looks a little bit like the truck is on stilts in my opinion. I have that lift with 285/75's and an aftermarket wheel with 3.5" backspacing. It rubs a little but no big deal. I had to trim my valance a little and if I did more offroading might have to do a little pounding.

I'm currently running 265/75/R16 on my 97 Limited with no lift and it doesn't rub at all.
After my lift, I'm planning on 255/85/R16. I don't foresee any rubbing.

Rubbed the a-arm, pinch weld, frame and bumper valance, also some frame rub on sharp turns.
Started out with 1/4" spacers but quickly went to 1" wheel adapters because spacers = blech for a few reasons
BFH'd the pinch weld
The adapters also solved the frame rub
used utility knife to cut the bumper valance following the line created by the edge of the bumper
a 1" body lift also helped with some stuffed rubbing, more room to move.

How are you people doing "lots of research" and still missing this? It's on Steve's freakin website! Plus there are a million threads on this subject. Good Grief
I didn't miss it. I even talked to Steve on the phone a few times when ordering my lift regarding tire size and wheel backspacing. I'm just waiting to replace my front end suspension parts and get alignment before trimming and whatnot to make sure I'm making the proper adjustments.

I chimed in because it's not that cut and dried. Besides the plastic bits I can't run 285's on either stock split tri-spokes or land cruiser rims without rubbing the frame or upper a-arm on the 96 with a Sonoran Steel 1.2 lift. The pinch weld got in the way too. That was either with Michelin LTX M/S or AT2s. I think several of us have found there is a bit of variability on fit. It's not a problem and I'd get his lift again in a heartbeart, it just is.
I do agree, this stuff is plastered all over the web and on nearly a million threads.

Ha, I was just cruising your build thread. WOW, that 4runner is going to be like new when you finish. Hope it doesn't hurt to much when you start bashing on it.
and Steve is a great guy, I've picked his brain a few times!
Thanks for the additional info Mauzer. Admittedly, I never looked on Steve's site. I crawled this forum for all kinds of info and pretty much made my decisions off of everyone's inputs. In fact, I just called him up and ordered the kit and moved forward. The thing that I've over looked is that the limited edition seems to be a victim to more rubbing than the other trims. Anyway, I'm thankful for everyone's thoughts and the information you've shared off Steve's site. Hopefully the OP got the info he was looking for.
