Tire wear

Has anyone else experienced excessive tire wear on the outside of their front tires? I'm wondering if it is just the stock tires (which I know are not that great) or if it is an alignment issue, although the truck does not pull to the left or right. I'll be putting on new tires before winter and was just wondering if anyone had this issue on stock tires and had it go away with new tires?

I suppose it could be normal for these trucks, but I would like to know for sure.

Allignment and regular rotation is your best and only defense. You can be out of spec enough to get uneven wear and not have a pulling issue (i.e. Toe out or camber out but caster is in) caster is more likely to cause drift or pull. Toe or Camber edge wear. Also, low tire pressure can cause edge wear. Tire cups in the middle and the tire runs on the edges due to sidewall stiffness but not as likely with P metric load rated tires.
Rotate every 5k religiously and have the allignment checked. IF uneven wear and still under warranty that would be covered.
 
It's been 1.5 years and I do not observe excessive tire wear.

I second what RubiconSS mentioned. I do rotate my tires every 8,000 km (5,000 miles).

Do you mean the outside edge as opposed to the inside or do you mean the outside edges of each tire? How many miles have the tires been on the front?

I would recommend to check the alignment first. You can get your alignment report free in some places... like Sears for example.
 
I have 35,500 miles on the tires. I would say the tires should have been rotated more often then I have done it and maybe that is why I am noticing it so much. If the tires are left on the front too long is the outside edge of the tire going to show the most wear?
 
I don't understand the mystery, you have an alignment problem. Sure, rotating tires extends the life a little, but that's not your problem.

I don't know how badly worn they are, but I sure wouldn't spend money now rotating them. Replace them and get an alignment. A good shop will include free rotation in the future.
 
Alignment! I got reamed by one member here for suggesting that not all T4R's are perfectly aligned when they arrive at the dealership.

You'd be surprised at how far out you could be and still track straight. My camber was off on my driver's side wheel--a vehicle with 11 miles on it.

Also learned a tidbit from my alignment guy. Not uncommon for solid axle vehicles to have one wheel slightly forward of the other by a minute amount. Never heard that one before.
 
Jeez oh Pete, Allignments are painful enough without getting reamed:wow2:

As I mentioned, An Allignment and then regular rotation is the best defense.
Tires ain't cheap.
I recommend to those who eventually trade your rigs, get your new (better) sneaks while the crappy OEM's are still decent that way when/If you do trade (maybe for another 4Runner) put the craps back on and keep your good ones (maybe the second or third set by then).
I've done that and it was nice to have an extra set of "Good Quality" tires.

Well maybe, maybe not, the most truck like thing it does is pull a 1200-2500lb trailer once a week for about 50 miles. I have a full size diesel pick-up to use when I actually need a truck. Other than off roading I'm not sure what you can do with a 4runner that would be comparable to what a truck is capable of. So I guess if your other vehicle is a Camry then yeah maybe you would consider it a truck.
 
Who else has more than 35k on the original tires? I drive like a granny and doubt I'll make it to 30K. Plus the OP tows!

3 days ago I lifted a car ( 3'' spacers) and i installed new tires 285-70 17. The wear on my right back tire is right on the both edges of the tire.
